I've decided to depress myself and find out how slowly I really ride in the hope that this will prompt me to greater efforts, and so want to buy a cycle computer for my road bike.

My preference would be wireless for ease of installation and neatness and my budget is about £50. I've seen some favourable reviews of the Cateye Strada Wireless which has the functins that I seek, but had a bad experience with reliaililty with one of theirs 7-8 years ago on my mountain bike.

Has anybody got any experience of the cateye or alternative recommendations?

Thanks

I have a number of VDO cycle computers and can't fault them ... This is a good deal at the moment

Stradas work well. I'm guessing that your antique wireless device had problems freezing and with interference. Did 1000 miles with mine with no problems before giving into temptation and spending £190 on a new toy.

Does it have to be wireless? I've got a couple of Cateye Mitys which are working well so far (over 3,000 miles on each, don't ask why I have two!)

I had problems with wireless ones in the past because they didn't like the security doors at work, it would register 56mph while I walked through them which skewed the averages etc.

I have a fifteen month old Strada Wireless and it has behaved perfectly in all weathers. I had to change the battery in the display unit a couple of days ago. Much head scratching until I discovered a YouTube clip of how to get the battery cover off. You need a pin.

I've got the Strada Cadence (wired version). Great features, simple to use but the contacts short out on the head unit in heavy rain and damp weather so it stops working, however the wireless version doesn't have these contacts so should be fine.

They look very neat mounted on a road bike stem. Only complaint is that it has no backlight. At this time of year all my riding is country lane night rides so I never know what I've done until I get back! However most backlit units that I've seen are very pricey and I would assume they eat up the batteries.

I got the Cateye Strada wireless only last week as a present. Very nice, neat, works well, a doddle to fit. Obviously I can't wax lyrical about longevity, but it's a nice little puter.
