I have a hybrid, and a tifosi and I'm looking to buy a trek domane.

I also have a lotus Elise, about 20k worth of photography gear, and a hifi worth about £20k

My wife has a bike she bought second hand for £15, drives a ford fiesta, has a cheap camera and thinks iPods are a waste of money.

This doesn't mean I'm a mysoginist, it means my wife has no interest in any of those things and we would be wasting money buying them for her.

Her only real fetish is training shoes and buys a new pair every 3-6 months (plus she's a personal trAiner so tells me she needs that many!)

You really shouldn't assume, and if there's a 6 year old kid, why would you spend a fortune on a bike that they will outgrow quickly and might get bored with?

I think a pair of my wheels cost more than my wife's and daughter's bikes combined. But then again I ride +5000 miles a year and my wife barely 50.

Her bike does though cost a lot more than she thinks it does as she would complain I was spending too much if I told her the actual price. She would have been ok with a BSO, but I would not be ok with keeping a BSO running smoothly.

Fair point - but as he is clearly big into his bikes, you'd think he'd want to encourage the passion in his family -no?
My son's bike is a beast of a mtb, no idea who made it, cost £35 from a 2nd bike fettler-man, maybe people think the same of me when we ride off together? But he has a tendency for breaking or losing things and so I'm not prepared to buy him the bike I'd like him to have.

On a more general theme, it isn't just bikes is it ?
Often times do you see a woman dressed in something chic, stunning , probably insanely expensive which makes her look a million bucks, to see her arm in arm with a bloke who is dressed like a rag doll in scruffy, creased, ill fitting jeans and an old tee shirt?

Wait a minute........................Maybe there are too many mirrors around?

Oaf on a Bike
I only really ever see solo men cycling around outside of town with very few exceptions, so the only couples/families I see are riding around the parks/towpaths etc at slow speed so its hard to tell if any of them are new or high mileage cyclists and often with matching Trek/Specialized bikes. I recall one family parents and kids all on very nice looking Specialized bikes, club logos on the frame IIRC, all looking kitted out in lycra, decent helmets, leaving the pub riding home in the dark on the road with not a single light between them.

I think a lot of us when we really discover cycling try to get friends and family into it, but theres no point getting them to buy really nice bikes if theyre unlikely to stick with it. Its a pain that it makes it harder to hide how much money youre spending on cycling bits though

Slowride and I have opposite problem :-( went to 'test ride' some new roadies today and ended up egging each other on to buy them. Both the kids have decent bikes and we are already looking for which bike to buy them next!
