So I am planning to do a cycle to raise money for breast cancer as we hold a pink party every year for the cause since my mum was diagnosed. sadly she has passed but we still have the event every year and I do a challenge for it and get sponsored and proceeds go to on the nights final count. Before I plan my route and how far I am going to go I was wondering if there were any good sites you could recommend that you can design your own jersey. I was going to opt for the one you can buy but i would like to design my own. also if you were going to sponsor someone for a charity ride how far do you think it should be?? Has anyone ever arranged such a cycle and can give me a bit of advice or know of a good cycle route which covers a fair distance that would be worthy of people sponsoring me for?
Any help welcome thanks in advance.

if i was sponsoring someone in a cycling charity event and i got to choose how far i would say lands end to john o' groats!
seriously though i would ask how far are you comfortable doing max?
for me the furthest i have done in a day is 65 miles roughly so if i were to choose a charity event length for me to do i would say 80-100 miles as i would train before hand for this sort of thing
Cheers Ed

I would say rather than just covering distance try and make the ride symbolic.
Is there perhaps a place you could ride to that has a special meaning for you and your mum?

That's a very good point ill need to have a think Berwick was a place that springs to mind as we used to go to a caravan there when I was little and she loved the place.

I am starting training this weekend and I think I want to achieve the 80 to 100 mark so going to start with 20 and then up my game each week. As I'm new to cycling I haven't covered much distance although just been commuting. Starting my longer journeys as of sat train before I need to take on the challenge.

training is essential for any distance and my tactic is to ride a set distance 1-3 times a week depending on what time i have available so say i start with 20 miles

week 1:
monday-commute
tuesday-commute plus leisure ride of any length i like
wednesday-commute and 20 mile training ride
thursday-rest or commute if there is no alternative means of transport
firday-commute
sat-leisure ride of my choice of length
sun- 20 mile training ride

week 2: do i feel ready for 30 or 40 miles?
repeat similar sort of thing as week 1 but mix it up as to what you do on what day and only increase training mileage if your body said so and if your body aches take a rest day, everyone does including the pros

then continue from here week by week until you are doing 80 or 100 miles or what ever your goal may be

If I was sponsoring somebody it would be because I wanted to donate money to that cause, I don't sponsor people as a way to make them do something difficult or embarrassing. So it really wouldn't matter to me how far they were going.

Agreed with the above, make it something symbolic I'd add, don't end up planning something that is going to cost you extra money to do (i.e. a ride that then involves collection, or B&B) this may be a personal thing, but it always annoys me when people spend loads of money to earn sponsorship money, they might just have well of donated the costs (people from the UK going on charity rides in India etc. I'll not donate to for instance).

I did a 227 miler in July 2012, I always remember my Mum was proud as she thought it was a bit nuts. It was to Skegness and back which was one of my Mums fav places, she always used to love fish & chips and an ice cream on the sea front. In October 2012 she was diagnosed with cancer and just two weeks later we lost her
Ive had the thought recently of turning the ride into an annual trip, not sponsored again just for the memories and thoughts.
As said, try an make it a trip with a place meaning, will make it that little bit more special.

I think I'm going to do Berwick as thinking about it today we had some excellent memories there. Would like to thank you all for the input and ideas on training and so on.

i did an 80 mile charity ride for my work which involved all the offices in cornwall. didnt do much training (apart from my all or nothing approach to commuting) and stretching out the rides a bit in the evenings when i had time (20 ish after work on top of a 10 mile each way)

from what i remember a few years ago there are two type of printing avaliable (from the choice i had for the thing) one where its printed into the fabric (a la team) and one where a viynl like sheet is printed onto then ironed/stuck onto the jersey but is still vented.

most importantly of all, Good luck and enjoy it!
