I second Fab Foodie. Why buy second-hand when you can have a brand new car for the same money with 3/4year guarantee? Take a good look at the Dacia Sandero. It is basically a Renault so well tested and proven engineering. Well worth a test drive.
we are looking into the small print of the guarantee before deciding if we would want to test drive one etc... I would be doing ALL maintenance etc on the car as i do now, we dont trust dealerships/other garages with our vehicles. If the Guarantee doesnt allow me to do just this, we dont want to take the risk of buying a new car that is so cheap brand new and ending up having to fix major issues that arent cropping up yet

What about a Citroen C3?
£6.5k will get you a good spec 3 year old diesel.
We're on our second one. The first one did 165k in 10 years and cost us virtually nothing apart from serviceable items. It was still on the original clutch, original alternator, original starter motor, original battery when we sold it.
Honestly I can't recommend them highly enough.

The C3 is a contender. I have a Citroen Dispatch and love it.

As far as I know, all new car warranties require servicing to be done by a VAT registered garage.

Thatll be a no on a brand new Dacia then. Not worth the risk for us.

The Cee apostrophe D is another contender. Would have to be a older, used one to fit into our budget though.

How about a Vauxhall Meriva?

My auto is a nicer car to drive than I expected, and @Fab Foodie likes them, so they must be good.

Fair bit of headroom, so you ought to fit.

Plenty of onboard storage, and the suicide doors make it a good baby carriage - might be an attraction what with you being a young couple.

Your budget would get a main dealer prepped 2012 - lots on autotrader so you might not have to travel far to find one.

We have a Roomster. It serves its purpose well, I easily got a lounge chair in the back to take to the tip. At 6' 7" would provide enough headroom, even if the OP took to wearing a top hat whilst driving.
It ticks every box we need for it as a means of transport but is as interesting as a potato (apologies for the Clarkson moment). But what would I know? A septuagenarian neighbour of my Mother-in-Law loves hers. Ours has a DSG gearbox and I'm convinced it is an ex-mobility car.
I do have an Alfa Spider in the garage as an antidote though

Seconded, it's a great car, functional, drives well with some nice design features. Good wagon for a young couple. Always happy to have one when I get to the Hertz desk.
