Third vote for a Meriva. I love the suicide doors and glass roof on mine.

Because I work on motorcycles mainly, I havent as much experience with cars as some of the people on here do. I like to hear honest opinions of other people, not think I know it all just because I can work on something. Ive only ever driven my instructors car, my van and the corsa. Ive not worked on and driven every car on the market.

Were going to look at a Vauxhall Insignia in the morning.

insignia....no..but do have a look..DMF is a main look at ,any vibration etc..run away

What's you're annual mileage? Unless it's moderately above average you won't benefit financially from a diseasel.
approx 35-40,000 a year.
why do you want a car? Berligo van has huge headroom if you are 6ft7, I have one of the 1.6hdi getting nearly 60 to the gallon, comfortable, bikes take a few seconds to fit in the back, can sleep and cook in the back, many more times more practical than a stupid car.
I have a Citroen Dispatch as my own vehicle, this car is for my GF who needs a car, needs the seats in the back, needs the boot space, needs something reliable, something she can use for work (a van is out of the question there unfortunately) She also needs to be able to carry our nieces/nephews in it as we babysit them alot/take them from their mums to their dads etc etc, ill only drive it occasionally on the long journeys...

Modern diesels with inbuilt particulate filters in the exhaust need fairly regular longish motorway journeys to burn the crud off the filter. If the car mainly does short/slow runs the exhaust will never get hot enough to self-clean... that's were you'll start getting problems (and bills).

Kia Picanto. Both Jannie and I have them. Our garage looks like Noddys workshop.

You get a 7 year guarantee, 5 doors, good on fuel and insurance and ours never go wrong, even though we do very little to them except drive them every day..

Sorry a bit of a hi-jack but you can get derv for less than £1? We're still at £1.06 around Sheffield/Doncaster et al, only unleaded is below £1.

Well.... Thanks for all of the suggestions and recomendations... It really did help.

We went to quite a few dealerships today, Looked at quite a few cars. We even looked at a BMW 1 series (insurance is alot more than what we want to pay for anything BMW, Merc or Jag).

We even looked at that Skoda you linked to @Dec66.

Test drove the insignia and we both hated it. Test drove a 2011 Passat 1.6TDI bluemotion estate and liked it.
Test drove the 2011 Skoda Fabia 1.6TDI and it was OK.

We were about to give up for the day when I nipped into the dealership I got my Van at to get a oil filter for it and had a quick look around.....
GF sat in a 2008 Peugeot 308 1.6HDI 6 speed gearbox with 1 previous owner, 42,500 miles on the clock, All the extras and mod cons... And loved it... The salesman convinced his boss to let us take it for a test drive just before they closed for the day and We both liked it.
£2,999 and we even convinced them to give it a "proper" valet and fill the tank up before we pick it up tomorrow morning. Itll be put to the test tomorrow too, Straight off to Cardiff and then to Prestatyn before coming back Sunday morning.
