Hello all, what are your thoughts about going on a cycling holiday ? Would you go on your own, or with a group of friends?

With friends. Safety in numbers and mechanicals. Ride by day, drink by night. The. Do it all again!

Have done both. My gap year in 1985 started with friends and after about 2 months we all dispersed around Europe as we all wanted to do different things. I ended up in Italy for a year and, met loads of new people and had a great time.

Earlier this year one friend and i went to India and cycled round Rajastan with a bunch of people we didn't know. Luckily they were all good fun and we had a fab time.

I suppose if i had to choose it would be with friends, someone to share the memories with and the ups and downs of life on bike.

A friend and i were half planning on doing the WOTR coast to coast this year... but on realising it was 170 miles, and after a little mental arithmetic, he figured it would take about two weeks  ... I'm now thinking about doing it solo.

2 weeks ?? Bearing in mind a lot of people cycled 100 miles last weekend in under 8 hours, how did he work that out ?

i think he just thought... how far would i like to cycle each day? maybe twelve miles... 170 / 12 = two weeks!

I suggested he go for a 20 miler, then a 30 miler, then a 40 miler on subsequent weekends, then on the next bank holiday, do 30-40 miles three days on the trot.... but no sign of much/any practice yet

2 weeks? I'm sure you could easily do it within a week...

3 or 4 days in my book... hence considering doing it solo.

Mind you, my friends are the same, hence my post. I'm up for a challenge, any cycling challenge, but the thought of doing it on my own its a little bit mhm, worrying. I do 30-60 miles on my own at weekends, but want to do like 5-7 days cycling somewhere . I think I just have to set my mind to do it ;)

He doesn't get out much then ?

It will be his loss i have no doubt. Tell him you will stop for cake/beer or whatever he fancies every 20 miles.

Plan ahead, there might be some interesting things on your route. And people are always friendly and chatty to a single cyclist ;)

not so much these days. We did tour the lakes about 20 years ago for a week... I know he's got it in him but just want to see him do a few big rides on consecutive days first.

edit... clarity needed, i might be patronising him.

I'm sure his lungs and legs can do the work just as well as mine... but without many hours in the saddle on a regular basis, being stuck in the cycling position for 4-6 hours a day (with breaks of course) may take its toll, and day after day stuck in the cycling position is what touring is all about... well, that and the views... and going weeeeeeee down hills.

Your never alone, always another touriste to natter to on an evening if your in that frame of mind, and by going solo you don't feel beholden to ride at a speed your not comfortable with, or stay awake drinking when your nacked, or eat in too cheap/dear a place etc etc.
