cycling in bad wind

Wow bad winds this morning in yorkshire stopped at lights and a driver said you shouldnt be on the roads in this weather , my reply was him ok as long as drivers pass with care . . What do you should we leave the bike at home in bad winds ?

It wasn't too bad when I left home and cycled to work..... but looking out the window at work..... hope it calms down for 5.30 tonight!!!!

I'm not cycling at the moment but I wouldnt have risked it this morning in Leeds. Its bad enough with 20-30 mph winds but 40-70 gusts, no thanks would rather take the bus than end up under one.

One of the old boys I used to ride with once gave me some advice for cycling in to the wind 'Hunker down, change down, shut the **** up' he never said too much but it was always to the point when he did.

The wind, touchwood down here have never been as bad as the winds back home. At home there would often be strong gusts and I had to be prepared on route and think more about my route before I headed off but I cant recall it ever stopping me. What I did do a few times was take the train across the River Forth, rather than the FRB cycle path.

Pretty much what I do, far slower than normal this morning, but nothing major. Just be wary of side winds (most dangerous in my opinion), look at the terrain around you for potential sudden gusts (gaps in hedges, side roads etc) and you'll be fine.

The scariest moment I had was while cycling with a side wind coming from the right, so was having to lean towards the traffic. A bus passed me (plenty of space) suddenly cutting the wind, I must have been inches from ploughing straight into the side of it!

Try altering your route to avoid open spaces, also try to use cycle paths instead of roads, in case you get blown into the traffic.
Only once last year I had to stop, push the bike for a bit on the pavement.

It was ok this morning for the ride to work at 7am. but the wind has picked in the last couple of hours which should make for a interesting ride home on the bike. On a good note the rain has stopped and the sun is out.

I have told Jannie to leave the bike at work and I will pick her up. I am not looking forward to the walk to the carport .

In fact if I manage to keep the car port roof on today I will be surprised.

Leave the bike at home

It's down to personal choice, but frankly its none of that drivers business, and there shouldn't be any issues as long as we drive/ride according to the road conditions.

Gusty crosswinds and a light road bike do not mix, all though you do get a great core workout.
