cycling in bad wind

Gusty crosswinds and a light road bike do not mix, all though you do get a great core workout.
potentially more of a work out than you would think - my unavoidable trip involved me clambering over 3 fallen trees with my bike (well 2 fallen trees, one of them twice due to a road getting closed that had previously been open and me having routed my way home that way. The only alternative being a national speed limit dual carriageway as it was going dark which I did not fancy one bit!)

Look at it this way: if you complete the ride in winds like that, just imagine the bragging rights you'd have! :hyper:

Last nights ride was not too bad I left a little earlier than normal. Lots of debris to avoid, but the tree lined road I use, was closed to motor traffic due to a fallen tree on a power line. The WPC at the road block said it was OK for me to proceed ^_^ An irate was motorist shouting at her. There was a fire engine and a police car at the incident but I couldn't see the fallen tree.

I don't see any point in putting oneself in unnecessary danger just for the sake of pride. I'd say take it easy and if it feels like you could get blown out of control then get off for a bit until it dies down or you are somewhere a bit more protected.

I thought I was going to hit cycing Nirvana yesterday. Wind behind me, stiff but not dangerous, into town, wind freshens, becomes dangerous, front passes over, wind changes direction and calms down a bit, and is therefore behind me on the way home.

However,

The bit that got in the way was the train from town to work. Half the trains back in the evening were cancelled - the larger trains. And then the 17:10 that I was going to catch was delayed until it was later than the earlier train. So as I was heading off for the next train, I imagined all the passengers for the cancelled train, and all the passengers for the delayed train all trying to get on a 2-car unit, and decided that bringing my bike with me was either going to be dreadfully unpopular, or just not possible.

And I was right, so felt I did the proper thing by leaving my bike at work over the weekend.
