Does anybody have any experience of this? I'm going here for university next year, but still have the option of opting out at the cost of losing my £100 deposit. Obviously cycling is a huge consideration for me, and if the quality of cycling in Charlotte is not as good as that in Lancaster (which is a lovely area to cycle in) then I'm not interested. The sort of thing I'm looking for are long hard climbs (blue ridge mountains maybe? )and a fairly lively racing scene for all abilities...... feeling a little disheartened looking at google maps as the area seems extremely urban, so any input is greatly appreciated

Why would you pass up on the chance to study abroad for a year? (Well apart from the tuition fees).

Erm you have tried Googling? A quick Google search seems to suggest there's a pretty active cycling scene.

You would be mad to miss a chance to go to the US. They have roads. They have flights trains cars and buses to get to some superb places. Do it.

The Appalachian Mountains should be close (well okay about 40miles away looking on the map).

As what the above said. You be mad to miss the experience. I spent 2yrs working in Virginia, things didn't work out with the job, but if I got another offer there I'd be back like a shot, and far more so since I took up cycling and could explore the place properly. Only thing I'd say against it, is the climate in the area can be pretty brutal in summer for being active outdoors (i.e 35-40C, extremely humid).

Well obviously, your call, I'd just seriously look into it. Guessing you will get similar answers on this, as it's a forum full of people who like exploring new places...

I've heard that Charlotte is, unusually for a US city, a pretty pedestrian-friendy place. Some business associates of mine have just set up an office there, but I've not had a chance to visit yet.

Check out the Two Johns cycling podcast, one of them lives in Charlotte and talks extensively about the local racing scene
you can still get it via iTunes or Missing saddle.com.

Just to add, do you want to be a sad bloke in 20 years time banging on about the time you almost moved to the US but chose cycling in the UK as a preference. If you do, don't ever mention it at a job interview
