I have just overhauled my 04 Allez with a new cassette, chain and bottom bracket. I went for a 30 mile cycle for the first time in a year or so. As I push down on the pedals, especially in the small chainring, I get a clunk as the pedal stroke seems to need to catch up a small amount of slack.
I get this unless pushing quite a low cadence in a high gear.

I am going to change rear derailleur as old one has barrel adjuster which is broken off, just like the one on the downtube. But shifting seems okay.

Any ideas? Rear hub?

Oops posted twice tried to delete but can't find a way. Sorry

Loch side.
From your description, it sounds as if the pawls in the rear hub are slow to catch up. In layman's terms, the freewheel ratchet is slow. Does this sound possible for what you are experiencing?

That makes perfect sense… I thought of that only when typing this post! Is it an easy fix or is it a new back wheel?

Unlikely to be a new back wheel, as the pawls in a bike of that age will be in the freehub, is a replaceable part. First off though, try squirting something to "thin out" the grease that's in there. WD40 might do it.
