I understand what you're trying to do and it's a noble idea. My experience is though that these things are always more hassle that they're worth. I used to use a car forum where a guy said he could get a bulk deal on brakedisks and pads from a leading supplier. Loads of people thought it was a great idea and said they'd take him up on it. He went ahead and started taking names and asking for deposits. Guess what? All that enthusiasm evaporated and the whole thing fell flat. Which is what usually happens.

You've had your twopennyworth so why don't you wait until it fails now and then you can say 'I told you so'. Meanwhile maybe you should let MacB have a go without so much negativity.

I haven't read all this but it might be open for people with a certain number of posts or months on here behind them. Similar to ebag and amount of feedback, to prevent a total stranger coming on and knicking. Maybe this has already been suggested or is a naff idea. I really ought to read it all.

Can I? Don't be an ar**. I'm not looking to gloat but trying to be realistic. When these kind of schemes are proposed everyone jumps up and says how wonderful an idea it is. Those who might imagine the possible problems tend to say nothing for fear of being shouted down as a killjoy, but I don't give a stuff.

In theory these are always great ideas but they fail to take into account how big a pain average people can be to deal with. Best of luck with it, if you do it I hope it works.

MacB being an educated, sensible and pragmatic bloke already realised there is a risk of abuse but I didn't see it as particularly helpful of you to state the bleedin' obvious before he's even got the scheme off the ground.
If someone wants to effectively steal a stem from another member then so be it and you'll have your 15 minutes of fame;)

p.s I prefer to be called a nob or a c*ck. Cheers!

Surely if you need a particular stem, you buy one?

Well, Yes and No.

I've just bought a cheap, longer stem for my road bike to see if it made it more comfortable.
It kind of has, a bit, but not really quite worth it. The stem was only £15.00 because I only wanted to try it and is, consequently, heavy.
I'll probably keep it on but would rather have bought a better one so feel I've wasted £15.00 really.

I want to try a 50mm stem on my MTB. Again, I don't know if it'll be any good or not, but it's going to cost me £20.00 to find out, and £40.00 for a decent one if it is any good.
I'd love to be able to "hire" one for a quid or so, and then either buy it or buy a new one I really want, knowing it's the right size.
