Hi all, today I met a rather charming elderly gentleman who took great delight in telling me I was riding along a footpath and it was not for bikes.

Can anyone clear up my confusion. This footpath is in the countryside along side a field. I thought we bikers were not allowed to ride on pathways along roads. I have checked the footpath I use daily, and never had a problem before, and there are no signs to say bikes are not allowed. I gave way to the man and was polite so not sure what his issue is.

It's a public right of way that everyone uses

It looks to be a footpath, however people ride horses, motorbikes and tractors sometimes use it.

Seems unfair that I'm pulled up for riding a bike

Unlike the townk I had an argument with last night. Through the Olympic Park. Narrow bridge (it;s being worked on) and he was tearing through on his bike passed plenty of pedestrians including young kids. Shouting 'coming on the right'. Flew passed me. When back on the road I caught him up. After a brief exchange of me telling him swerving between pedestrians is the sign of a crappy inconsiderate cyclist he informed me it was a cycle lane and not a shared path. But he agreed that pedestrians were allowed on it. And no cycle marking other than the one he saw on his map. I said that made it a shared path. He disagreed and therefore felt entitled to ride like a fuktard,

Irrespective of what type of path it was he had no concept that weaving at speed was a dickish thing to do. One of those giant cameras on his helmet obviously to record what a nob he is.

Yes it is. Can't get a map unfortunately. It's in a village called Amport. The path is off a road called Wiremead Lane. By the sounds of it I'm in the wrong. Shame because it's a nice little track

There's no specific offence of riding on a footpath (as opposed to a foot way) unless there is a local by law in place. Nevertheless, we know were not really supposed to do it so can't really be too upset when someone points this out.

I can only see footpaths coming off Wiremead Lane. Unless specifically posted on the lanes themselves you are not permitted to ride a bicycle, a horse, or use any motor vehicle on them. If the path in question looks like it could sensibly and safely be used by cyclists, maybe enquire with the council if they have any plans to regrade it?

Couldn't agree more, it's just the way he said it. Was hoping I'd have an argument to back to him with. Oh well maybe next time
