Yee gads that's close ;)

He soon backed down though once the cyclist vented his displeasure at the manouvere!

Nahh, that's not close. He should try cycling in Cambridgeshire where the drivers are even more friendly. They get so close, any closer and they'd be kissing you ;).

Try cycling in South America - drivers there ARE dangerous.

They may of ended up with a nice dent if they'd of done that to me

Workmate of mine did that. The driver did it on a RAB and screamed out (in a thick Glasgow accent, which is rare down here;)) a few choice words. He said he put a fair old dent in the roof too. They dont make cars like they used to.

However the other way to look at it is that the cyclist should be futher into the lane and not give the car the opportunity to attempt the overtake in the first place.

The cyclecraft book has some interesting theories in relation to road position of cyclists in that most of us cycle too close to the kerb and give motorists the chance to 'box us in' towards the kerb. If you cycle further into the road then they have to wait if traffic is coming the other way.

I have to say that I have started cycling further into the road and it has worked, stopping cars trying to force you into the gutter and especially true at junctions where they have to wait behind you !!

Although in fairness to cyclecraft, it's not just about road position. Looking back, timing, and signalling each do as much to aid our way as road position does.

I lived in NZ for seven years and can confirm that drivers there are as bad as over here. In fact, despite there being a far smaller population and hence far fewer drivers, there actually seemed to be a higher proportion of dickheads when they got behind the wheel.
