I'm planning to do my longest tour yet. Round the Baltic Sea in July - nine countries and about 3000 kms. My questions are -
Is there a prevailing wind direction?
Would it be better to go in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction?
I hate cycling into a headwind ;)

I asked about wind direction on here a few weeks back. This website is pretty good if you have a play around:

http://www.windfinder.com/windstats/windstatistic_map_europe.htm

I'm guessing that route is pretty flat, so it's all about the wind. But surely you will turn into it at some point whichever way you go?

Thanks for the link - it's probably what I'm looking for.
The wind direction is going to be more important on the Polish side of the Baltic as it's flatter.

Ive cycled around a few of the countries around the Baltic - Wind as I recall

  • Denmark – Predominantly westerly except when very hot in mid-summer then easterly
  • Norway – July - was not significant as I recall - September – Stiff South Westerly a lot of the time
  • Sweden – June, July, August and September – was not significant as I recall
  • Finland – July and September - was not significant as I recall
  • Baltic States – September - was not significant as I recall
  • Poland – September – Stiff Westerly
  • Germany - August - North-westerly - Late September - Stiff Westerly
I think in July and August the wind direction is pot luck - should not be a significant problem

Thanks Andy and psmiffy for your advice.

I had a look at the web page Bodhbh suggested, and there seems to be a tendency for anti-clockwise wind round the Baltic in July.

I read a report in CGOAB by a woman who did the same route years ago - she had to fight against a headwind for SEVENTEEN days and was forced to use her granny gear. She then met a couple cycling in the opposite direction with great big smiles on their faces due to the tailwind they were enjoying.

bye for now
