Cycling Routes

I was just having a quick google of cycle routes in the North West or a little further away and struggled to find a decent website. Does anybody know of such a website that would point me in the direction if scenic country roads rather than through towns ?

You can't beat getting out on your bike and compiling your own list of routes. Any given road leads to anywhere you want if you want to go there.

A mapping tool that deliberately selects the quieter roads is www.viamichelin.co.uk. I used to use it to plot 100km audax routes. It very rarely placed me on a busy road.

It seems to be down at the moment.

Failing that, get a cheap motorists' atlas and plot some routes of your own on minor roads. It's much more satisfying to ride a route that you have planned.

When plotting routes myself I like http://bikehike.co.uk

You can export the route from viamichelin and import it into bikehike I think where you can fine tune the route.

I use map my ride there's loads on there.

I like to use Memory Map to explore my local routes, put in my average time and print it all out on to A4 paper, then go out and ride it.

Depending on how far you want to ride, and whether you live on a corner of one or nearer the niddle, OS Landrangers are a good scale. With the cover taken off, they'll usually fit in a cycling jersey pocket. You can see the contours, if you want to tailor your ride for hilliness. All the villages are shown, and landmarks like pylon lines/windmills/churches etc are shown which help you navigate.

These two square kilometers are not particularly helpful on the landmark front.

Depends what you want but the Lancashire Cycleway is a good route with lots of variety. Google it.......about 250 miles in total from memory.
