I would like to buy a Sat Nav for a cycling fanatic, I have looked at the Garmin Edge 200, it seems to have great reviews and a good spec (from what I can gather although, im not actually a cyclist) and most importantly Ive found it at a great price!

Is there anything major that the Garmin Edge doesnt have, (normally just uses Strava) that they would be missing out on with other units?

Any advice would be appreciated!

The Edge 200 allows you to program a route and follow a breadcrumb trail on screen but there is no map. If you want moving maps on the unit then the Edge 800 is the cheapest Garmin unit that can do this.

The 800 offers proper mapping and turn by turn directions, but costs rather more. There is also the cheaper Touring option. If you search, the options get discussed regularly

i have the garmin edge touring, the cheapest garmin model ith a real map and turn by turn directions, and simply love it! the garmins are usually classed as the best for cycling computers and/or satnavs
if this cyclist wants to get geeky or races and wants to know things like their heart rate and their cadence (how many times their legs go round in a minute) then they will need either the edge 500 without maps and turn by turn directions or they will need the edge 800 with all these features and turn by turn directions with a proper map

hope this helps!
Cheers Ed

I have a Garmin Edge 705 which is a few years old now, but is great for navigation. It also lasts for a good few days, so if you are away on tour for a while no need to worry about charging every day

If they are a cycling fanatic, they probably already have the basic Garmin 200.
Better make sure!

Sorry to be a killjoy but apart from that useful speed what is the point of the 200 ?

That Carphone place does smartphone PAYG upgrades for £10.

I use an Edge 200 and find it all I need, basic ride info and uploads to Strava to plot my progress

I'm just a leisure cyclist and tend to ride within a 40 mile radius of my home so don't need navigation as I know the area well

I'm also no athlete so my heart rate and cadence aren't important to me, if I feel a bit knackered I stop and have a breather and when the pedals just start to get slightly harder to pedal or my legs are going a bit too quickly I change gear!

I had the Garmin Touring Plus and it was awful. Took an age to lock on to satellites and the screen/map regularly froze. If you take a wrong turn the re-routing doesn't work well. iPhone and a handlebar mount for me.

The 200 cannot connect to external sensors (eg. for speed, cadence and heart rate). The 500 and above is needed for that, so it depends how much of a fanatic they are

If you need mapping, the 200/500/510 etc. use a "breadcrumb trail" so you can follow a pre-loaded route. To work like a cars sat-nav you'd need the 800 or above.

The 200 is NOT a sat nav, It does little more than track where you went, how high and how far. The 800/810/1000 are much much closer to the definition of "sat nav" and are very much like the car equivalent but with cycling specific compatibility

So the first Garmin edge in the range, with the scrolling on screen map and turn by turn direction's is the 800 then?

No its the Edge Touring.

The edge touring is obviously for touring cyclists. It does not have Cadance and heart rate or a little man to race against. But I think it has everything else that the 800 has.

I may be talking total rubbish because I have only had my Edge touring for a couple of weeks. I can plot a route, record a route or just follow the on screen map and it seems to work.

I've just ordered a Touring Plus from Amazon.
