Cycling with a pinned ankle....?

Anyone ride with a pinned ankle.
Family member is getting it done but wants a new bike so I have suggested a step through city shape bike.. he's quite old.
Anyway can one atchally ride a bike with a pinned ankle?

Do you mean "pinned" for an ankle fracture or a "fusion" (arthrodesis). A relative of mine had a fusion due to old injury and severe arthritis and it hasn't affected his cycling at all.

I've just hopped on the trainer to have a look and there isn't a lot of ankle movement in the pedal stroke??

No experience of pinned ankles, but have suffred from several broken bones - ankles, pelvis and collorbones. In each case, I used a static turbo for the first month, before venturing out on the road.

Would suggest your family gets a static turbo set up, with an easy gear, before deciding a new bike.

My wife broke her ankle in 1978 she had it pinned and she recovered nicely. In 1980 I bought her a Raleigh Panache with drop handlebars she loved it and rode everyday to her part time waitress job and her Gym in Boscombe, Bournemouth. All was fine for many years she progressed to a Mountain Bike in 1998. We moved home twice since then and she was slowly plagued with Arthritis in her broken ankle and in 2019 she had her ankle fusion operation. This was so successful no more Arthritis pain and she recovered quickly and can now walk faster than me but hasn’t cycled for a while.

Yes she can but is so busy she doesn’t have time. She enjoys long fast walks now, she is into her seventies and fit as a fiddle.

Cool so she can cycle ok with the fused ankle or does it cause problems in the knee and hip joint?

No problems anywhere at the moment thankfully

Ideal thanks. Don't want to get a new bike and it cause problems if cycling with a fused ankle is a bad idea

She says having her ankle fused was the best thing she has ever had done. She also says that cycling would be not a problem at all now the ankle fusion has been done. She says if only they had fused her ankle in the first place it would have been far better, she says.
Oh yes, she didn’t have a general anaesthetic just a local and she was awake and watched it all done, by the NHS specialist on a monitor

Yes, judging by my relatives experience . There isn't a great deal of ankle movement when you are pedaling although I expect it might be a difficult movement to get out of an SPD pedal.

Agree with @Sharky - try a static set up or maybe even borrow a simple exercise bike first?

He has bike experience. I was just asking if anyone else had a fused ankle and rode ok.
He doesn't need a trainer or anything else for that matter but does want a new bike so I thought I would ask about ankles before he spends out as his ankle will be out of action until spring.
So I will scoop up a sale bike for him before judging by most replies.
