I got my front wheel bumped a while back by a driver cutting a corner while I was waiting to turn right.

Got his details just in-case something was damaged that wasn't immediately noticeable.

There is an argument about incident stats being used to determine whether roads are adjusted or not.

He got 'life' - but a disappointing 13 year minimum tariff.
Lets hope that some pro-cycling mofo in nick takes him under his wing, as his bitch.

A couple of years ago, I was commuting through Portchester when I noted a cyclist down on a roundabout, with a woman directing traffic around her car (and him)

From the positioning it looked like a left hook

So I approached the cyclist and asked if they were alright..... he relied that apart from a few minor scrapes hw was fine, but he had told her he could not move, then made her phone the Police and stay directing traffic so that she could not move her vehicle!

When the Police arrived, he got up, made his report and got the Police to deliver his bike to the LBS

Not sure I fully agree with his actions, but it certainly meant that the Police were involved.

For the record (apart from the bruise) I'd consider this incident had a positive outcome, especially if he tells his mates.

As for the perp having no tax or insurance, don't the scanners in police cars flag up any cars they spot that aren't entirely legit?

Sounds like you handled it well. Whereabouts did it happen?

The clip was turning left out of Longbenton. Our chat was after the final set of speed bumps on Hollywood Avenue.

When ever someone hits you have a quick check of te tax disc. If its out of date it's doubtful the car will have insurance. 5 second check which can save you a lot of trouble. As a police officer said to me once people don't specialise in what laws they ignore they generally ignore all. As I was saying if the taxes is out call the police that moment as normally there will be more they don't have.

Call the police for a tax disc?!

I thought the DVLA would be the appropriate place to report it?

To my knowledge (K) which could be wrong, however this advise was given by @CopperCyclist
(K)You cant obtain insurance without tax.(K) So no tax is a big red flag to no insurance which is a police matter. You cant do a road side check to find out however the police can.
Main point is its a simple check to give you an idea as to if this car checks out.

Just to complicate things what you can do is purchase VED, then insurance, and let the VED run out. The insurance is invalid but the car shows on a database as insured

However even then if a cop knows its got no tax then he knows his insurance is invalid. It does not matter what its says on the database.

Both above wrong I think. You need to have insurance and a valid MOT to tax your car. You don't need tax to get insurance.

A number of people get a cover note and use it to tax the car and then don't take up the cover, so whils t they got a tax disc and appea r ed to be insured at one point, they are actually driving around uninsured.
