I totally agree. Cyclists are the black people of the USA during the 20-60's
I think that is understating the race issue ever so slightly....

I think the important thing is this: While we all get abuse, car drivers give other drivers abuse as well, and for the most part it isn't all the time - it's only every so often. It's not worth dwelling over (unless you report it to the Police) and 99% of people won't actually hit you if they're all "Come on then, dickhead".

Maybe over stated. I've never see cyclists being beaten by raving mobs. Maybe you know better?
I didnt say the violence was the same but the situation is the same. They are equal but drivers see them as inferior. There was alot more to civil rights than just violence and mobs
There are plenty of examples of violence anyhow.
im studying it for history aswell. A2 level
All about King and civil rights movement.(shockingly alot of the violence provoked by the blacks and King)

In between here and there
I think the point CD is trying to make is that it is socially accepable to spew abuse towards cyclists, hell the Radio shows can fill hours with it.

By allowing it to be socially acceptable it follows that it is good fun to close pass and bully cyclists, then follow through with some nicely choosen and well practiced verbal abuse.

In terms of geniune, obvious malice, I've had:

1) A can of Strongbow thrown at me
2) An oncoming car come over to my side of the road to scare me
3) And a bloke shout 'Get off the road you daft c---'

But on the other hand, I have more positive interactions with motorists than I could possibly count. I don't think it's accurate to compare cyclist-abuse to the racism in the US in the 20s. In fact, if I was easily offended, I'd be offended by that.

If you replaced a race/colour/gender/sexuality with some of the crap seen on twitter #cyclehatred they would be charged with an offence of some sort.

It's already an offence:

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1997/40/contents

Aside from those who throw things out of car windows, which is seriously illegal, it is an offence to shout abuse at someone. It's the catching and prosecution that's the bugger.

what he was saying, since its cyclists they don't care. If i was to call a black person a "nigger" on twitter for example. I would have the old bill round mine for some tea the next morning.

Are you saying you'd like the police to get involved when someone insults a cyclist on the internet?

This is cycling, not race/gender/sexuality. Comparing cycling to the way non-whites were treated between the 20 and the 60's (where there were massive changes) is not comparable without ignoring some pretty major things that happened.

Chalk and cheese.

Cycling is a lifestyle choice or a way to get fit. Once I'm off my bike and in non-cycling clothes no one's going to know I'm a cyclist. I've never been made to sit at the back of a bus because I'm a cyclist. I had as much chance in education as non-cyclist children of the same age.

I do understand your point of view. But it's ignoring many things that happened.

Sounds like the sort of people who'd boast about how hard they are and will kill any burglars in their houses yadda yadda.

Yeah, works for me too. The only time I've had someone who wanted fisticuffs it was a 50+ year old superfit (not) heart attack candidate, and by the time he'd got out his car and walked round the my side he'd had time to properly evaluate the situation, and nigh on shat his pants. Peace Through Superior Firepower. - Works for me.
height works for me aswell, 6 foot 2inches quite towering.

I havent't had that many issues to be honest, in fact its mostly been ignorant drivers or drivers who didnt notice me.

I have had some comfort in the ebay key fob camera i bought, as i mounted it to my helmet and turn it on for each commute to give me video evidence if i need it.

Even though the police here are pretty good when it comes to cycling complaints as they all get referred to a police officer who is a regular cycling commuter so takes all complaints seriously.

The only major time was some woman who came out of a car park across the road straight at me and narrowly missed me, turned out her mum had died that morning and she was in a daze all day but she apologised profusely about her actions.

Shady

Can you post up the details of the camera you bought, please?

Cheers!
