Anyone know the story behind this attack?

A 48-year-old man has been charged in connection with an assault on a 70-year-old cyclist.
The incident, involving two cyclists, happened in the Greenmarket/Roseangle area of Dundee on 2 September.
Police in Tayside said the 70-year-old man was taken to Ninewells Hospital after suffering a double fracture to his cheekbone.
The force said the 48-year-old man was due to appear at the city's sheriff court on Thursday [today].

Cycle rage... There was me thinking cyclists mostly are tree hugging left wing vegans.

I would say that the 'I cycle to save the planet' BS mantra which some have extoiled over the years is far more damaging to the image and popularity than anything else. It makes people think that those who cycle do so for some smug self serving sanctimonious feeling of self riteousness....which some unfortunately do....

There's more detail here.

It appears the old man, who is profoundly deaf, was followed by the other cyclist who then set about him.

An update on this assault: the attacker has been convicted and faces "a lengthy custodial sentence". It turns out that he'd carried out an almost identical attack on another cyclist 11 months after the first one. He's been convicted of both crimes and sentence is deferred until 9 January 2015.

From The Herald newspaper:

A man who chased a 70-year-old on his bike before assaulting him in a row over right of way on the road has been warned he is facing a lengthy jail term.
Graeme Brankin followed his 70-year-old victim from Dundee city centre for around a mile before hitting him so hard that his eye socket and cheekbone were fractured.

The pair had argued over right of way in the city's High Street.
The pensioner was cycling when he heard shouting from behind him with Brankin calling him "blind" and "stupid".

The OAP cycled off but later sensed someone behind him.
After another argument Brankin struck the man so hard his glasses and hearing aid fell off and his legs buckled, causing him to fall from his bicycle.

A jury at Dundee Sheriff Court heard the man needed an operation to insert three metal plates into his faces a result of the attack.
A three-day trial heard from another victim of an almost identical attack elsewhere in the city, which took place 11 months later.
In that second cycle rage attack, the next victim said he had been hit by Brankin in a park and woke up later in Ninewells Hospital.

Brankin, 49, a prisoner at HMP Perth, had denied charges of assault to severe injury and assault to injury.
But a jury took less than half an hour to find him unanimously guilty of both attacks.
Sheriff George Way said: "He should be in no doubt to expect a lengthy custodial sentence for these cowardly crimes."
Sentence was deferred until January 9 for criminal justice social work background reports and Brankin was remanded in custody meantime.
