It's always fun when 4 cars arrive at the same time to one of these mini roundabouts - giving way to the right as the next one does the same:laugh:

I also ride over that mini roundabout daily. RIP.

I thought it was impossible to lower my opinion of the York 'Press' but their reporting of this death has pretty much managed it.

Very sad to read this.

As an aside - the usual crap journalism though... cyclist wasn't wearing a helmet, but the car driver is (thankfully) okay.

Mini roundabouts are a contentious thing and TBH but until you actually cross the give way onto it, you don't have right of way over vehicles already on them.

Because of the layout of a mini roundabout (usually replacing a T-junction) people think they still have right of way because it is positioned in the middle of a main road and as a consequence bang on through as if it still is their right to do so due to the angle of the other entrances.

The bottom line with these roundabouts is to ensure that you are able to travel at a speed so you can stop within the distance you see to be safe, and it would be unfair to apportion blame to the driver until the facts are fully known.

RIP to the cyclist in any case. It is a lesson to us all - especially i these damp winter months when the roads are greasy and the light poor

I hope my comment is not unduly harsh. Tragic outcome and every sympathy to the victim's family. And I'm sure it must have shaken up the OP and others who use that junction.

But: there's really only one rule that needs to be observed at mini roundabouts, and that is, traffic approaching on your right has priority. Even if it's not yet anywhere near the roundabout. Keep that in mind and you may survive. Insist on only giving way to vehicles already on the roundabout (as the HC suggests) and you may not.

I need to negotiate lots of mini RABs and, as often as not, there's a long line of cars approaching by the exit on my right. I let them all go. Not to do so would be suicide. Sometimes another vehicle already on the RAB will block the line, giving me the chance to slip out, but not always.

So the question is, if the cyclist was travelling south towards the RAB, and the car was travelling east towards it, the car had priority. And I'm afraid the cyclist would have been at fault. It looks that way, comparing the press photos with the google street view: the bike seems to be lying on a grass verge to the east of the RAB, i.e. the nearside facing south. But if I'm wrong, please correct me!

To be honest, I had that problem on most of the mini roundabouts in York. Shockingly bad driving, people will say that maybe it is universal but fortunately there aren't many round here at all.

Bike on the verge doesnt prove anything. When I got hit someone picked up my bike and moved it. Which really doesnt help the Police to establish what happens. Luckily a witness stopped and told the officer

<heavy irony> They've taken their test and pay road tax, therefore they have nothing to learn.</>

'City of York councillor Joe Watt, who represents the Skelton, Rawcliffe and Clifton Without ward, said: “It is a tragedy for the community. It is very saddening. “It causes me considerable concern and I think one of the lessons for cyclists is that they have to cycle defensively and be visible. Wearing a helmet can also make the difference.” '

Joe Watt, I'm assuming has, as a result of this tragedy, begun a campaign to increase the number of cycle lanes or somehow help the cause of the cyclist. I would hope at the very least that he puts a bumper sticker on his 4x4 or volvo.

Joe Watt is an idiot and his comments are an insult to the chap who died.
