I thought that the whole idea of journalism was to make people think, even if it was to disagree.

Clarkson is in the entertainment industry and his appeal is his own rediculousness. Just like Alf Garnett etc the idea is that you laugh at his outrageousness and not take it seriously.

Clarkson rides a bike himself. It's called Alex Hall.

Don't you mean Harry Hall?

Err maybe, maybe not  He's certainly a marmite character but I'd regard someone like that Guardian fellow that advocates piano wire across cycle lanes as more dangerous. In clarksons own words "I don't have any influence over what people do, I really don't. It makes no difference what I say. Top Gear is just fluff. It's just entertainment – people don't listen to me."

I think that was Matthew Parris in The Times rather than The Guardian which tends to be fairly pro-cycling.

The top gear lads like to light the blue touch paper and stand back to watch everyone up in arms, their hatred of caravans is well known but two of the James May has owned one for years , its all for the shock / entertainment market that they come out with all the "we hate ......." comments

They just jump on the bandwagon of the jokes about Cycles , caravans , tractors on the road

Yup thats the fellow, Parris is an odious little turd compared to a windbag like Clarkson

Ho ho.

Which of those is actually in danger from people whose sense of righteous anger is reinforced by Top Gear's lazy "comedy"?

Its not christmas yet!

I'd say none of them are in danger, if you dont like the comedy fair enough but its a stretch to say the programme endangers anyone. And I've only heard Clarkson be critical of cyclists, Hammond is normally pro-cyclist and I quite enjoyed his London race he did (even if his legs looked funny lol!)

It'd be funny in a world where the very idea of a motorist taking umbrage with a cyclist and putting their life at risk as a result was so remote as to be laughable.

We're not there yet in the UK, as punishment passes, and a memorable incident where someone got out of their vehicle to punch me because he thought I'd said "F*ck you" to him, not "Thank you" prove.

And the "comedy", in the case of the "knock 'em off" comments and similar, is gutless, unthinking, lazy pandering to the audience, although I accept that my critical response to it entirely irrelevant to the point above, fwiw.

With the boat? I had serious worries for Clarkson's heart as he "ran" along the jetty there. He is either a man wholly unfamiliar with that level of exertion, or a good actor.

Hehe I'd say your 1st judgement of clarkson being completely unfamiliar with exertion is correct!

TG is a generally contentious programme at times with many people, and on a site like this it will always be love/hate I think, each to their own of course.

For me when they do car pieces right, they do them right e.g. The lancia memorial piece, the look back at the Rover V8 etc etc Its a shame that at times they get too puerile/crap
