As for "I thought I had hit an animal"..
I was not sure if hit a rabbit once, I thought I had managed to avoid it but couldn't be sure. I turned around at the nearest opportunity and went back to see (a) if I had and (
to make sure I had not just injured something which would need either veterinary attention or despatching as humanely as possible
Thankfully there seemed to be no trace and I know that even if it had crawled off somewhere, at least I had done all I could.
I don't get the "oh, thought it was an animal so didn't care" as a defence...

Unfortunately it does. Getting rather sick of people not driving safely and accepting their actions can kill.
