It seems amazing to me that people would worry about the weight of a pair of lightweight mudguards. You'd save more weight by having a pee before you got on the bike.

Not worried about the weight, personally. I just think they look really ugly on a road bike. I've never worried about getting wet or getting road spray on me in the three years I've been commuting, so I see no need for them in my case. You get just as much spray and crap from the cars, buses and lorries on the wet roads, so why do I need to worry ?

Hence why I had this specced as my commuter..........

Both road bikes won't take guards (talking 5mm clearance) and the MTB went back to off road.

Can't beat guards for commuting....keeps the crap off you......

PS never had spray from other commuters....if you have, you are not going fast enough...stop drafting.......... club rides is different...sloppy cow poo in your face isn't nice (been there)...

Cars, buses and lorries all have mudguards.

A wee bit of mucky spray on the Deuter backpack raincover and some manly crud-spattered legs get you lots of respect and admiring glances for being hardcore as you stroll into work

If you tried strolling into my office like that I'd make you stand outside while I got the cold water hose out :-D

Indeed. That's the preferred outcome at many of the *ahem* 'saunas' & 'massage parlours' in town.

I tend to find I get sprayed whether I am cycling behind someone with or without mudguards. There is possibly a degree less from someone with guards but I would argue that most mudguards are only effective at protecting their owner rather than anyone behind them. The exception of course, would be those cyclists riding with mudflap extensions that are an inch or so from the road.

An odd thread IMO. I guess that some feel their bikes are 'safe and road worthy' without mudguards. I have found that being sprayed in the face with shite from the front wheel makes safe riding difficult, even with eye protection on (although I didn't try full goggles).

I have a rear mudguard. that's purely to stop road spray from soaking my backpack and getting my shirt wet.

My bag isn't waterproof, and the waterproof cover I have doesn't fit it very well and makes it uncomfortable.

When I eventually buy a waterproof rucksack, I'll probably ditch the mudguard. but maybe not, as I quite like having a relatively dry arse.

Exactly.

In fact anyone who wants to take the moral high ground re mudguards and how selfish people are who don't have them, should be forced to ride around with guards that have a nice big slab of a mudflap, front and back....

....Oh, and one of those orange arms sticking out at the back.....

....and be made to wear a cycling cape.....

....and a cycle clip on only their right leg....

Yes, bikes do look naked without guards, sexy naked. Mudguards are the equivalent of wearing a wincyette (sp) nighty to bed.
