I have found that horses particularly dislike recumbent cycles, especially those with flags. When nearing a horse I generally dismount and remove the flag.

It’s the flag rather than the recumbent design. I ride a recumbent and no problem with horses. Call out early, slow down, wide berth, be prepared to stop if necessary.

While I was off the forum suffering temporary insanity I gave first aid to a lass that was thrown form her horse right in front of me. Helluva fall. Pulse, breathing, visual inspection for bleeding and deformities and then - with her permission - felt along her limbs and spine for any breaks. She was more worried about the horse!

My VTX seems to upset horses quite a bit so I now pull over and get off it which seems to calm them down

I do. But not ridden it for 5/6 years...health issues mean I ride very little now
