Don't think any speed checks round here. Many cars are driving much faster than normal. Less traffic overall, those on the roads driving faster, more (and often less experienced cyclists out) may not make for a good combination. That said I prefer the emptier roads myself.

with the increase of people speeding I now totally avoid some roads, there is a nice long straight from Halland to Ringmer near me, avoid it, I had two cars pass at speed (I was in a car on a essential journey blood donation) they then raced side by side it was some of the worst driving I have seen regardless of the current situation.

I think the police reported it on their website. I saw the link on FB - I can't find it now, sorry. The dual carriageway death reported that a 21 year old woman had been arrested for death by dangerous driving at the scene.
Dual carriageway and a 21 year-old? I bet the first thing they checked was her phone.

There are clearly some well reported cases of idiots.
But in london, despite emptier roads,i have the impression that drivers are being more careful/nicer/in less of a hurry.
They are ! Drivers are saying sorry if they make a mistake and i had a van driver toot me when i waved him past , He tooted and waved for me to carry on while he say behind me  Maybe they are missing the traffic jams

My experience is that drivers have split into two camps during lockdown.

1. Want to be extra careful and considerate

Or

2. Take the opportunity to be even more of a prick than usual.

I see plenty of both.

There are an awful lot of noob cyclists just now, with little or no skill or roadsense.

Some basics are a must before going out on the road, I've seen a few adults that really needed stabilisers or the saddle down and the pedals off swanning down the middle of the road.

I couldn't believe the behaviour of a man in lycra yesterday. I was driving my van far behind him doing 20mph, he was to the left of the lane until every time we came to a long straight bit of road, where I could have safely passed him at a distance, he swung to the white line looked back with a smirk on his face. It's no wonder cyclists are so badly thought of and so many are hurt.

I've not been on the forum for a long while swapped cycling to work and touring for a campervan. Thinking of getting back into cycling although yesterday put me off a bit.

I wouldn’t let one Herbert put you off mate, I can’t understand why he was doing that tbh ,

One possibility would be how bad the condition of the road was and pulling out was the only safe place to cycle. A B road through a village near me has a defined cycle line southbound that if you vary off its hello noticeable depressions if not actual pot holes. Not sure anyone would smirk deliberately at a following car but you would look back frequently to check what was going on behind you.

That's true as I'm sure we all know a stretch of road that you describe, I know I do and I do wonder sometimes if the following drivers think I'm just being an arse.

By which logic, one idiot in a car would put you off driving.

Great time to get back into cycling, enjoy!
