Cyclists help road safety !

Well i do ...

Coming along a country lane and i see a large branch in the road on the other side with cars either swerving to avoid it or running over it, so i stop and indicate to the oncoming traffic that i am going to move the branch.

Traffic both directions stop as i walk across the road and dump the offending branch onto the grass , getting waves from both lanes of traffic .

The fact i did not want to cycle back in the morning when it will still be dark over large splinters had nothing to do with it of course.....

It's so much easier to stop & help people on a bike than in a car (except of course it's not usually possible to offer someone a lift ).

tbh I think its more the cyclists mindset, I am often sent (as passenger in the front) to go and rescue various escaped farm animals

I recall once ushering some ducks out of a road once and getting smiles and waves as a result!

Reminds me I must carry a few more tools on my route - there has been a couple of times where I've seen stopped cyclists on my journey and decided not to stop and offer help as I realised I have neither the tools nor expertise to assist

It is definitely easier to just hop off the bike and shift stuff - there's a bag of tree clippings by the side of the road which I bet would still be in the road if I hadn't moved it - and that reminds me, I must remember that there's another branch that needs moving, I keep forgetting until I'm almost on top of it.

I gave my daughter a lift on the bike once (or a backie!) and we fell off!! She was not amused as she was 18 at the time and it was not cool!!!! Still laugh about it every time I think about it though because I fell on top of her and got a nice soft landing!!!!!!

I once stopped to usher away a pigeon in the road that was holding up a lorry. Unfortunately this was on my second ever day of going clipless. Cue a calamitous fall and a lorry load of builders in hysterics.....scared the pigeon off though and haven't had a clipless moment since!

Stopped once to remove an obstruction in the road. Road was nice and clear and level, so I was in a high gear, and didn't bother to change down (donwtube shifters in those days).
So, after clearing the obstruction, I set off in a way-too high a gear, and therefore was rather wobbly.

Car coming up behind presumed that I was drunk, and got a load of self-righteous abuse from some judgemental prats.

Once I was riding along at a fair lick to be presented with a road full of short (3/4"?) wood screws! Which resulted in doing a manic slalom as I came to a halt without a puncture. As I came to a stop a motorist came up behind & wasn't too please with my road position, my response was "see the screws? hear that hissing? that one of your tyres deflating!" Actually it turned out to be 3 tyres deflating so while I was clearing the road of screws (some other people also joined in which was nice) the driver was finding inventive new patterns of swear words.

It would be what 5 or more years ago... but I do remember the incident clearly due to look on the drivers face at the dawning realisation of what he'd just driven over.

Perhaps cyclists do help road safety in urban centres as mobile traffic calming, bringing the motorist to a respectable speed where they have more time to react?
