Cyclists nodding.

While I was out today, someone who looked like he'd just started scalped me, not even a friendly hello.

However, I saw another cyclist, looked like he was commuting from the shop, he nodded at me as he went right the island, as did I. and when I caught up, we had a quick hello etc.

So why do some people think they need to be anti social and others are more than happy to say hi, very weird.

it's a often posted Cycle Chat forum topic.

As regards to myself, sometimes I say hello or say hello back if I can be arsed, sometimes I don't. It's as simple as that.

Same as all walks in life Adam...there's nice pople and miserable gits. Cyclings no different...simple as that really.
I dont worry about it (not suggesting you are BTW ;) )...and carry on nodding and saying hello whenever appropriate.

In a similar vein...colleague got back into motorcycling. He bemoaned the fact that other motorcyclists kept nodding and waving...'why would i wave, nod, doff my cap or otherwise ...i dont know them, they dont know me...they can f off  '

Not my way of thinking, but i suppose he's entitled if thats his way.

I spent the last quarter of this morning's 50-miler in the company of a pleasant chap I met en route... we were going the same way and just got chatting. Hello Don, if you happen to be on this forum... got chatting near Elsdon.

Barnet,
I will nod to your thread, even though you will ignore me, and continue to acknowledge all cyclists.:hello:

Yeah you're all right, I shall continue to say hello.

When you walk down a street, do you nod at everyone you pass? Or (if you drive) at other drivers?

No?

That's a bit anti social isn't it?

I don't get why some people think everyone else ought to acknowledge them all the time just because they happen to be on bikes. If they do, fine, if not, fine too.

If I nodded at every other cyclist I saw on my commute, my head would fall off, and most of them would think I was some sort of loon.

BTW, does this sound ever so slightly like sour grapes? How dare some newbie come past me, and never even say hello...

Blimey Arch, I alway's thought you were a friendly soul, greeting everybody with a cheery wave and a big hello. Now it turns out you'd return my nod with a snarl and a finger

I'm not quite that bad! Sorry, maybe I was a bit strong. But I pass lots of people on bikes every day and don't feel the need to nod at every one - we're all just going to work. Actually, while I'm at work, walking the rounds, I do tend to nod or smile at people I pass. More time to react perhaps, and they are more likely to be 'customers' so I have some connection to them.

Out in the countryside, I'd be more likely to nod at someone else, but I'm not going to think less of them for not returning the gesture. They might be 'in the zone', or thinking about something difficult, or just daydreaming a bit, or perhaps just not feeling sociable - I know there are times when I'm chatty, and times when I just want to be alone in my own world. It's just normal human behaviour. I tend to return a nod directed at me, but I'm sure there will be times I haven't, without meaning to be overtly rude.

Anti social if I don't say hello?

Shove that comment up your arse you idiot.

And they said I was harsh!

I do think anti-social is a bit strong. Unsociable, perhaps, but anti-social implies deliberate nasty or bad behaviour. Unsociable just means you don't fancy interacting with someone, and I bet we all have that sometimes.

Erm, yh, I can close my front door, from both sides.

But, bottom line, it's not a helmet debate, and tbh, I didn't really expect it to turn into anything more than people sharing stories. But obviously, some people can't ignore what they find as annoying.
