I've been googling Rayner to find out more about what makes him tick. He even confesses that he "loathes" us.

After BBC1 and Radio5 Live Monday, I'm on BBC Radio Wales today from 1.15 - 2.00pm. It's about cyclists and in my case, my loathing of them!

If you twitter him then just politely deconstruct his arguments and ask why he responded the way he did when faced with the fact that law abiding cyclists are the ones suffering.

For me, the most irritating bit was the blatant lie from Rayner that in all his years since he passed his "cycling test", he's never seen a cyclist make a correct signal. I think the cycling guy missed a trick there by not pointing out that Rayner really ought to pay more attention when he's on the road and that that's exactly the SMIDSY problem we face from poor drivers.

Has Adam Rayner got a book out or something? Why is he popping up all the time and dishing out the same tripe? Does he get paid for these appearances? Martin and the guy from CTC both made good well thought out comments and Rayner just said the same nonsense which has got nothing to do with improving the situation.

Disappointed that the "road tax" issue was not handled correctly, that one should have been stamped on the head immediately.

The stuff about duty of care dependent on risk is spot on. One caller was outraged at this and for some reason compared it to flying aircraft using the example that a pilot of a passenger aircraft has to undergo very strict training/testing etc whereas a pilot of a light aircraft can just fly wherever he likes. Er no, but actually don't they both undergo quite strict training/testing but even MORE so for the pilot of the passenger aircraft? So duty of care dependent on risk does still apply in his silly example.

They could quite easily have made the whole "debate" a lot more informed and rational by first stating how VED works and reminding people that there are other vulernable road users as well as bikes who all have a right to use the road.

Issues to raise might include:

-why did Rayner accuse the victim of being an instigator of his own fate? How would this approach be seen to other victims such as sex, homophobia or race abuse victims.

-road tax b*ll*x, point them in the direction of the ipayroadtax website.

-licensing - point them in the direction of the Toronto scheme and the reasons why they dropped the idea.

-blane? Point them in the direction of the DFT's own figures for fault, 93% of cyclists are NOT to blame for the death or injury that resulted from the collision they had with a motorvehicle:

-insurance? Insurance originated as a measure to protect individuals from litigation, not as a device to generate a garanteed windfall in the event of damages or injury. The actual risks from cyclists are far less than from motorists. The injuries and deaths caused by cyclists are very rare for one good reason - you put yourself at risk if you act like a berk.

-bad cyclists!!! Why are they ranting about bad cyclists as if its all of us? No one applies the same generalisation to drivers and suggests they all drink drive. If they want to rant at someone, rant at the Police for not effectively dealing with transgressors.

If it's any consolation: I went to school with Adam Rayner & TBH he was a bit of a sad case. Very needy & attention seeking, not terribly popular & not a good advertisment for having an agony aunt as a mother. In almost any other school I suspect he would have been a major target for bullies.
The point is, people get put up in front of a TV camera & this immediately seems to give them some sort of status. If you met him in real life you probably wouldn't give a toss what he thought or said, so why care just because he has appeared on the beeb?

Very interesting ferret fur. I too went to school with Adam but we were very young, before his Mum made her career as an Agony Aunt.
In fact it was such a long time ago I can barely remember too many details. When I clicked the link to the BBC website it was the first time I've seen him in more than 40 years. Still recognisable, only slightly larger.

I was at school with Rayner. He was very fat then, and just as obnoxious.
Being Claire Rayner's son clearly hasn't hindered him or brother Jay from getting work in the media.
