Cyclists on Zebra Crossings..

I got a little bit annoyed riding home on the road the other evening.

Someone riding a decent road bike in nice cycling gear on shared use cycle paths expected me to stop for him when he crossed on a zebra crossing at the bottom of a hill. I'd have waved another rider through if I'd been in his shoes.

Now, I'd happily stop for pedestrians or people pushing bikes but "fellow" riders ? Gimme a break !

I wasn't on the shared use path because it's not set up for people cycling in the direction I take, for riding over 10mph, and also they're generally festooned with dogs, pushchairs, headphoned pedestrians all over and suchlike.

Do you expect other cyclists or motorists to stop for you if you are riding across a pedestrian zebra crossing ?

Do riders have priority on zebra crossings like pedestrians ?

The Highway code states:

Do not ride across equestrian crossings, as they are for horse riders only. Do not ride across a pelican, puffin or zebra crossing. Dismount and wheel your cycle across.

Zebra, Pelican and Puffin Pedestrian Crossings Regulations 1997 explicitly says "pedestrians". I don't know if it's been amended

Nips my sack. Not quite as much as RLJ-ers. But certainly enough to have a 'friendly' word with the malfeasant, who, locally, usually sends a pedestrian jumping out of their way once they've crossed.

I confess my stance has hardened after a pelican crossing riding nobber hit TLH last month.

I ride across a zebra most days, this one which actually has bike symbols marked on the pavement leading to it.
If there is no traffic I'm just cutting the corner across it, if there is traffic it tends to stop for me whether I want it to or not. I also use the one in this video at about 1:20 secs in, though not as often as that route gets very busy with pedestrians.

They are crossings for pedestrians not cyclist, the same sort of problem as car drivers using cycle lanes.

Nothing. Parking cars on the pavement isn't evil either. Nor is RLJ'ing. Speeding is fine. et cetera et cetera. Just make it up as you go along.

This shared public space mularkey? It only really works if folk behave in ways which are predictable and expected by others. Otherwise people get hurt.
