dad wants a road bike

I don't no where to put this post so thought id put in beginners. my dads after a 2nd hand road bike to get started, does any1 no of a cheap good bike to start on?

I had a carrera tdf from halfords http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_810691_langId_-1_categoryId_165710 down to £250 at the moment new great 1st bike good spec too I have also heard good things about the triban 3 from decathlon
