Damage to bike what next?

Left bike chained to lamp post for 10 minutes came back and found it 'moved' A couple of people in the pub opposite said a van clipped it leaving some deep scratches on the frame around the lock its also buckled the rear wheel.

A man has left note with his phone number as he has photos of the van which scarpered.

I've managed to ride home slowly.

What next?

Do the police need to be informed? How do i get the van drivers insurance details? What is the likelihood of restitution? Is the rear wheel repairable? The tire scrapes both sides of the 2 arms by the bottom bracket leading to the rear spindle?

I've had a totally crap day and this is just the icing on the cake!

I would tell the police, but am not sure you'll get much joy. Are you insured? Is there CCTV around? The witness is presumably happy to be contacted?

You can do an AskMID check to confirm the van is actually insured

Depends if the police follow it up. You could engage a solicitor and start a civil suit if you can find out who the driver was? Did the van have any livery? Do you have BC or CTC membership, maybe they can help

I suspect overall you may be on a hiding to nothing here. Yes its wrong but that's just life sometimes, maybe be more careful where you leave it locked up next time.

Contacted the person who had taken the images of the incident and it shows the van clearly on the pavement. They had to get out of the van to disentangle the bike and it also looks like they damaged the lamp post. There's a clear logo on the van with website (a furniture company in West Sussex)

Going to speak to the police tomorrow but wondering if it was worth contacting the company direct? Had a couple of offers of witness statement.

First thing to do is contact the witness to get the details so that you know what evidence is available - without it you can do nothing. Then a visit to the police station to report the damage and the fact that the driver simply drove off. After that (or maybe before so you can give the police an idea of the damage), a visit to a bike shop for a quote for the repairs. The police should be able to give you the vehicle owner's details, but if they are not helpful, then the DVLA can provide the details in a situation like yours. You should be able to claim on the driver's insurance yourself, but if you are a CTC or BC member, or have legal cover on your house insurance, then a lawyer would be very useful.

Just seen that you have the company details. I'd contact the senior man person at the company to see what they have to say. Sounds like the van must have some damage too.

Contact the company and tell them about the photos. Make sure you have a written estimate of how much the bike will cost to fix. Keep your cool and see what they say. The Van may have been sold and no longer belong to that company.

Have taken the day off tomorrow to get this sorted

Will call them tomorrow to see what they say and see if its going to be a fight or not.

Getting a price on putting things right doesn't appear to be that straight forward so will say the bikes in for a repair quote will get back to them.

Apologies if there are any police reading this (nothing personal) but trying to find an open police station.... lottery odds. Finding Charing Cross open but a queue of 20? people and only 1 person serving. Useless just useless

Contact the company. Don't tell them about the photos. See what they say. When they lie to you (just as their employee will probably lie to them) then tell them about the photo's.

A van collided with your bike and damaged it. The law requires that this is reported to the police within 24 hours. So then go ask them if it has been reported, and see the the police for yourself.
