I think 11 was about the cut off point with my lot, when I changed from being a welcome entertaining fool, to an official embarrassment!

Oh that's a great age for a party. I too kept well out of the way though  The strangest was her 18th. A sleep over was arranged and in the morning our farmhouse was awash with young ladies wearing very little indeed. There was absolutely no reaction from any of them; just wandering around asking the way to one of the bathrooms. I had a word with my Daughter to respectfully request she had a word with her friends to inform them I was not blind!

She is 33 now and we often chuckle about that night/morning.

Yebbut, to them you would have seemed so old that any potential for interest was probably shot out during the war!

It was my daughters 11th this year and she had friends round for a sleep over. I just remember my wife storming in to their room about 2am to politely suggest it was time to go to sleep

Actually though, they are good kids and although a bit noisy it was harmless fun.

The difference between when my son (nearly 9) has friends round and my daughter is quite interesting to see. The girls disappear off to listen to music and gossip, you wouldn't really know they were here. With the boys its a like a superpower has decided to carry out a "shock and awe" campaign in our house.

I was not yet blind and would they make an old man very happy and wear even less in future?

When I was teaching I would sometimes refer to 'the war'. It was interesting which war the students thought I was refering to.
To me 'The War' (or 'The Great War') is the 1914-18 war in reference to timber used in the trenches, and the effects on art and design from the Arts and Crafts period through to the Art Deco period, and the Great Depression.
To many of the students it was the Falklands or the Gulf war.
