Seen him a few times at Cropredy, great player. Seem to recall reading he'd been unwell for some time.
So unwell, in fact, that the Telegraph published his obituary on 29th April 1999. He's supposed to have commented "It's not the first time I've died in Coventry."

RIP Dave, you've left some fantastic memories, such as my late brother and me singing along while sailing in the Wash to

(pretty sure that was him on fiddle - I'll be bloody embarrassed if it wasn't.........)

Yes he had emphysema (too many fags!) and withdrew fron Fairport to form Whippersnapper when he went a bit Mutton. He played at Croppers a few years ago while sitting in a wheelchair with an oxygen cylinder and Fairport did a Swarb benefit concert in 1999 called Swarbaid from which they released an EP. He had a lung transplant in the end.
Great fiddler - he had a very distinctive sound which I much preferred to his successors.

Apparently, Swarb used to take photocopies of the 1999 obit to gigs and sell signed copies for a quid!
