For info I have never met either but if ever the offer came for Gervais I would turn it down, I have never seen any other persona in anything else he had ever done, even as a would be pop star.

Steve Cougan on the other hand I think it's a very clever & skilled comic

Interesting.

I would have thought you both less likely to judge a book by its celebrity cover

Edit, it seems multiquoting does not favour my phone @User13710

If it is a persona & not his real character then he has been very much typecast Night of the Museum he plays the same part, another where he plays a merchant in medieval times he plays the same part, when he is interviewed as 'himself' he comes across as the same part, maybe unfairly I have judged him, but I'm sure he isn't going to lose any sleep over it as he counts his earning rather than sheep.

You are right he probably doesn't care but that's not my point...im sure he is cackling all the way to the bank but I am surprised that you were struggling to differentiate between a character, a public persona and a person.

Personally, I have never met him and don't know anyone who has...he may very well be a total numpty but as you say, its wrong to judge him...or anyone...on such limited and contrived appearences

Clearly we found a flaw in my otherwise flawless personality, I don't know why it's him, as you say I don't know him, I've never met him, , what is very strange is although there other people who I chose to dislike he above all is the one I really do not like. Now if you wish to pay my expenses & the time of a psychoanalyst I'd be happy to lay down for them & discuss it in detail. Maybe we're too alike & I see so much of me in him, now there's a worrying thought!

Look, we get that you like him. You are being a bit patronising in assuming that I can't tell the person from the persona! Every time I see Gervais, he is being Brent, as I have said. I'm not alone in thinking he's an insensitive, unfunny, one-string fiddle, but there you go it's only showbiz.
Who says I like his persona, I've never said that.

You are wrong to make assumptions both about gervais, his real personality or my thoughts about his work.

You, in fact could not be further from the truth.

Its actually possible. I appreciate that you are kidding but maybe there is more in that than you think. I don't know you...but I reckon you do, ill leave you to be the judge of that.

My point here, isn't about Gervais. Its about our willingness to judge based upon nothing but the media image, be that a character or the extension of themselves that they put up in interviews to represent themselves

Sure we can judge someone's work, we can even judge their media persona...but we shouldn't be so easily persuaded by the media to judge THEM.

Sorry to muti quote.

You may consider it patronising, I don't intend it to be. I just think you are wrong.

To reinforce this, read what you have just posted above.

You argue that you are able to see the difference between his public character and his self. Yet, without any knowledge of his self, you judge it.

Worse, you go on to state that you are aware that you have never seen the real him, that every time you see him, he is Brent...being in character, being obnoxious...being what you see him to be....its a pupppeeet!

I get what you are saying but I believe you to be wrong, you are making a judgement on us because you claim that we only see what he wants us to see, I'm saying that what we see his what he is & it's not an act, Gervais/Brent is/are the same person in both persona & life. But we will never know as he is unable/unwilling/incapable of showing us anything else.

My wife is as senior a manager it's possible to get in the NHS and her role is with disabled people and she was choking and screaming with shock and outrage at the mentality Ricky Gervais chose to give to David Brent. She so believed in the character we were watching that she was raising out of her seat on many occasions to go and make an official complaint about the person we were watching, most especially concerning his comments on disabled people! Now THAT is an accomplishment on
Mrs. 66 loves David Brent, and is going to see the film.

We have a disabled child.

If his crassness toward disabled people in the film is as authentically toe-curling as you say, it's going to be interesting to see how she reconciles this.

If you are being interviewed as yourself on a chat show you have the chance to portray your own personality as you wish people to see you, so if you choose to dick around in a certain way you can't be surprised if people think that's just how you are.

It is as toe-curlingly embarrassing as it's possible to imagine.
