OK, the guy's dead so you can say what you like.

It seems to me he achieved a great deal in his chosen profession and was a decent enough citizen in other respects.

So why the need to trample on his grave?

Yes - it's not exactly trampling but perhaps people who've only seen him at televised awards ceremonies or on screen haven't had the chance to see the whole of this remarkable man's career - the truly extensive and involved charity work, chairmanships of artistic and education organisations, starting his own independent film distribution company etc etc.

David Puttnam just said this about him:

"Within a famously competitive business, in almost 40 years, I never heard a false or unkind word – only constant support, and through the best and worst of times."

There are not many people who would get an epitaph like that - I guess there is a reason that he is "deah".

Actually I don't think there's any sneery posts you've just read it wrong. I think the posts reflect the fondness for him and for him being an original luvvie, meant in the nicest way.

I too enjoyed the BBC tribute, they've clearly had that "in the can" for a while as you cant just knock together something like that over night, with so many contributions from the great and good of showbiz.
I know The Times has obituaries for most famous people already drawn up, but you wonder how many of these the BBC have sitting about on shelves, just waiting for people to fall off their perch.

Loads, I imagine. When I worked for a local radio station, our news team had obituary pieces for just about everyone famous and elderly from the area.
