Resolution this year is to cycle as many days to work as humanly possible...Over the last two weeks have managed fine but what about tomorrow??? Forecast is heavy snow. Know that if it is actually snowing (will believe it when I see it!!!) then I've got to take the car (don't have studded tyres and 10 mile cycle on unlit roads) but what if it hasn't snowed by the time I leave???
Do I go for it and hope it doesn't snow...or be sensible???
I'm not the sensible type btw but don't want to be stuck 10 miles from home and have to pay for a taxi (I'm trying to save money by cycling!!!)
Any thoughts would be much appreciated (and ribbing about MTFU),

There's a fine line between being adventurous and foolhardy. Sometimes it's not very clear where it lies, especially when you can't see it because of the snow. If you haven't got the right equipment and kit then my advice is don't which includes bike as well as your clothing. Leave your bike at home. For those fools who do cycle/drive in such atrocious weather then leave plenty of time to reach your destination and go prepared as best you can.

i am taking car as snow fell overnight and more due today
Did the same...got to school to no heating (all ended up in the hall for the day) and then when the kids were playing on the field at playtime one of them came to me and said' "Mr. Lunn there's a big hole in the field." I laughed it off until I went and there was a hole about 12 foot square and 7 foot deep where the land had collapsed!!! What a day

Many years ago I made a similar resolution in a the suburbs of Sarajevo. It was about 4 miles from my flat to my office and I resolved to ride in for a year without taking the car or a bus.

My memory tells an unlikely tale, but in the end I made it through the winter by using the most 'rideable' surface. Sometimes that was uncleared tarmac. Sometimes (depending on temperature, recent snowfall etc) it was cleared and gritted tarmac. Sometimes it was back roads or even (shhhh!) pavements.

In those days my home and my office were in separate entities of Bosnia, the Federation (not the Star Wars one) and the RS. The Federal Entity had money for gritting and the RS did not (or was dividing it up among the corrupt political elite).

Things to look out for: Cables will freeze inside their outer if water gets in. This (in pre-disc days) can leave you brakeless and likely to become a comedy clip on Youtube.

If you go off-road, smooth snow can cover very, very hard frozen ruts of mud. This can also lead to comedy Youtube moments.

I'm sure it can be fun in the UK, but I have to admit that when I did it, traffic volumes were extremely low.

That's the key, for me. I was cycling on an frosty country road recently, with ice patches. Because it was traffic-free, I was happy to trundle along at 11-12mph, knowing that if I were to have a spill, only my pride would be hurt.

On road's where cars are flying past 12 inches from your elbow, it's a different matter. I rode very gingerly today.

I don't do snow or ice on the bike. The first 7 miles of my commute are rural and having come a cropper on them on more than one ocassion in the past then this weather for me = car

I decided against cycling today, but in other news I have a big penis and my dad could definitely beat up your dad.

I've been commuting on the fixed as usual all week, and plan to continue for the rest of the week on the fixed. Had no major problems yet, though some of the side roads have been interesting. I've been surprised to find that St Giles road has been largely clear so far, the road doesn't get gritted or salted, has houses one side, open fields the other side and is used as a rat run to a nearby industrial estate, it has a descent on it and normally is iced or snowed up, so far its been OK.
