Don't go giving up. I pick a steady commuting route - i.e the best route without lots of traffic hold ups, side roads etc.

At weekends, spend a bit of time picking all the back roads for a pleasurable training/leisure route - you'd be surprised how traffic free these are.

I found Google maps invaluable in walking mode (and street view if you have it there). You can drag your route around, check what side roads look like.

Another +1 to the Cyclecraft, but what about paying for some cycle instruction? I'm sorry if that sounds condescending - it isn't meant to, and I'm assuming you're an experienced driver and road user. Pretty much every one of us on here including myself can improve our riding, and cycle training is a great way to do it.

Road positioning, herding the cars around you, and all that sort of stuff is not quite the same as driving, and I know I improved a whole bunch due to training. I'm a reasonably experienced driver and motorcyclist too, so it's not as though I was unaware of the problems that two-wheelers face.

The hard part is making sure you get a good instructor.

move to the country, been riding for work (and play) for almost 6 months (though I chickened out when it was horrible weather) and the only moton issue I've had is my sister nearly running me into a wall while chatting to me at about 5mph
