From what you've said the stay put option seems to be the best deal. Free time is priceless IMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, should also have said, I've got to have made the decison by Tuesday next week (with it being a Bank Holiday).

One thing that you haven't said is whether or not you have sought the opinions of the people that really matter; your family.

Paul, I have the benefit of having met you and I think you are of a similar age and at a similar stage in your life to me. I also have an interesting and enjoyable job which pays well and doesn't stress me too much. Two years ago my immediate colleague, who was 10 years younger and more impatient as well as very materialistic and cash driven, talked himself into a position with a competitor which, on the face of it, looks enviable. However he has put himself into a situation where he will need to perform extremely well in order to deliver what he promised at the interview and we his former colleagues are watching with interest to see what happens.

At our stage in life I believe we need to be taking care of our mental and physical health a lot better than we might have done in our 20s and 30s. If cash isn't an issue and if you have the stimulation of your own business, why stick your head above the parapet? It sounds complacent but as others have written above, it's all about achieving the right work/leisure balance. How would your family feel if your stress levels and absences suddenly increased?

To spend a large portion of your day doing something you find so dull must be soul crushing though. What exactly is more interesting about the offered position?

You say you work in the medical profession, will you be able to help more people in this new job if you do take it?

Great point. What is so dull currently is the work. There's no job satisfaction but with the new position, there would be loads more case-planning, advising and the supreme pleasure of seeing a very sick (sometimes at death's door) patient suddenly become very well indeed. There would also be the immense satisfaction of being part of a close-knit team who achieved those great results. The downside is the pressure to obtain those great results is enormous. If you are one millimetre out in your case planning, the patient can die, lose one or both kidneys or be rendered paraplegic for life. It's a job I've done before so I know all the ups and downs so it's not like I'm stepping into the unknown.

take the interesting job. Why spend the majority of your time doing something dull, you only live once.

+1. I think I'd choose the interesting job just because work is a large part of the day.

The work life balance is important - why can't you have a similar balanace with your new job? Are the hours different?

Yes, longer time and more days in theatre/IR suite. I rarely have to go into a theatre in my current job.

Face it Paul, at this time in your life you work to live, you won't handle the pressure and you can't do serious anymore. Just stay out sight in your current job 'till you retire, you know it's your level.
