I had a lovely tailwind on the way to work today. Very lucky in that the wind was not too bad when I was cycling in but shortly after I got to work it seemed to really pick up, then a squall line with torrential rain went through around lunchtime. After that it calmed down and cleared up very quickly, such that cycling home this evening was fine, no rain and minimal wind.

Not my idea of a day for cycling, I was out on the sea taking a close look at my avatar, among other things, from midday until darkness fell.

No where near as bad this evening as it was this morning, I nearly got blown off my bike at vuaxhall bridge this morning :O

Still not that bad in London compared to other parts of the country.

My 31.5 miles took 2 hours 39minutes in total. Wind blowing in from the west at around 30mph... I hurt like hell now. Can usually complete both legs in under 2 hours...

12 mile commute today ( 6 miles each way ) wind was freaky deaky, nearly got blown into the kerb big time at Crystal Palace. lucky enough I missed the rain completely but still had a headwind both journeys.

I leave for work in an hour, was hoping it would have died down a bit, but it's still howling out there
Oh well, he who dares :bicycle:

Pah-you've just gotta learn to use the buildings as wind breaks. My commute home looked like a flight of stairs, took me a lot longer than normal though.

Bit blowy here. Side wind both ways today (12 miles each way), big red arrows all over the map at xcweather.co.uk this morning. Other useful sites to help you worry about the conditions are www.raintoday.co.uk and www.meteox.com.

Enjoy.

Very blustery on the way in this morning. Not so bad on the way home. But I'm glad I wasn't cycling at lunchtime. I could barely make progress into a headwind on foot in the city centre.

Haha ... i like how some of you are quoting met-office wind speeds. (Like 50mph wind and 70mph gust).
The speeds given in the forecast and often quoted in the news are measured ten meters above ground, and more
importantly in the middle of a wide open raf airfield!!
Once you're at ground level even the odd bush and tree can quickly dissipate the wind strength.

My (aborted) 30 mile ride tonight across the fens saw my front wheel taken from me twice, such was the force of the wind.
When i got home the details from my home weather station showed gusts of only 30mph (at 7.30pm):

Temp Falling:6.1c Humidity:69% Dewpoint:0.8c Wind:SW 23.0mph Gust:29.8mph.

Next time @wisbechweather shows wind like that ... i'll take the mountain bike. :ninja:

Mine are recorded at St Bees Head lighthouse. About the same elevation as my route straight at the coast and with exactly the same amount of cover (ie zilch)

Do you not commute on a tall bike like everyone else :-)

Chickened out this morning & drove in, due to being feart of bits falling off big hard things. Got home, & found a steel garage door had been blown just where the bonnet of my car would have been.

Nope! way too dangerous to venture out on the bike today in the North East, even out shopping (pedestrian today) I noted at least three people blown over, huge powerful gusting winds today and loads of structural damage at ground level.
