Diesel - anybody know anything about it?

I can't remember when the tanker drivers last went on strike, but I do know that at the time our income depended upon being able to drive to certain locations on particular days, shyt or bust. I therefore filled a couple of brand-new Army surplus 25L jerrycans with diesel just in case, and promptly forgot all about them.

I've just found 'em, so is anybody please able to tell me for sure whether I should be OK using it up while we still have the car?

The oil depot blockades were in 2000 along with the fire fighters strike (you see labour pissed people off too).

The diesel will be fine.

just in case filter it first before using but cant see a reason why not , the older the car the more chance it will be ok , if its a modern high pressure injection system then ledd likely to be ok .
but why not add it to a half full tank in car then fill up again so running more with fresh fuel rather than all old fuel

Put them in safe storage place and wait for a few years, the value will soar more than any other investment you can get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't see why not. IIRC, diesel comes in summer and winter formulations, the winter form is less likely to produce waxy deposits at low temperatures. You might have problems using the summer mix in very cold weather, but it's hardly an issue right now!

You're probably not wrong here! With production at old oil fields falling, and fewer and fewer new fields being discovered, a fall in fuel prices seems unlikely.

As an aside, would the difference in formula contribute to a difference in mpg? I'm sure mine's worse when it's cold...

I can't think of any reason why. I would hazard a guess that it's down to the change in air density - cold air is denser so presents more air resistance. (Which is also why you cycle slower in the winter. At least, that's my excuse!)

I'm sure the firefighters strike must have been either 2001 or 2002 because my youngest loved seeing the green goddess's and he wasn't born 'till 2001.
