I already posted in Boris Vision thread what is, or more precisely what is not going on.
http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/boris-and-his-vision.125693/page-4

Fact is that diesel cars can only feasibly remove pollution on uncongested motorways.
So with 50% of new London cars diesel the only certainty is a major increase in death.

Lets see if Paris bans diesel by 2020 as manifested by their 'doing' mayor. France has the same problem as London.

I'd say that we are all Nimbys. It is now wishful thinking that trucks and buses are mainly to blame.

Won't be parting with my nun murdering puppy slaughtering pick up any time soon. Not while no can still get veg to run it on at 62p/L.

It depends a lot upon the calculations and the way things are worked out as the claimed occupancy for public transport is often th potential capacity (50+) as opposed to average occupancy which is less than 7

This paper is typical

It quotes DfT research showing that:

While buses have been a relatively small element of overall transport CO2 emissions, the Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG) data shows that buses fuel efficiency has got a lot worse over the previous decade and consequently their CO2 emissions increased. Indeed the BSOG data suggests that average CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre are now higher for bus than for car, and without changes this may get worse given the improvements in CO2 emissions from cars.

tHe issue is also which vehicles they quote..... many fleets run older buses, but then quote the figures for the newer ones

... and we haven't even started on the ageing fleets of vans, LGVs and HGVs that also contribute

The very best Artics manage about 10.5 on an eco run, but that's exceptional. In mixed driving 3.5 mpg is more the norm from a well laden 40 tonner.

Conversely, my old pug 107 never ever dropped below 55mpg no matter how it was drive. Before my missus quite driving her 2.2 CRV would better 45 about town, nearer 50 with my notoriously light right foot.

Have you seen the proposals for the updated LEZ (or LEZ Max, or SuperLEZ, or whatever they are calling it) in London? Basically the LEZ will remain with the congestion zone becoming a second upgraded LEZ banning a huge raft of vehicles and requiring London taxis to adhere to even more stringent rules. It's a month or two since I read the thing but I think it was something like all taxis hybrid and no more than 5 years old. Of course, full implementation is at least 5 years off and I'm not sure what will happen once Boris is off trying to become PM.
I've gotta say that's not saying much considering the taxis I ride behind often. But its good they started talking about this stuff.

I heard about the same thing you did on a radio talk show.

No choice sadly- need my car, just resent paying more and getting less.
Same story for most of us. I mock my friends who have diesel cars but I know why they are bought. It makes economic sense too do so so while I make fun of diesel cars, I totally get it.
