Yes, and I also find it concerning that even though presumably most of the donkeys are overseas, 2/3rd of the charitable spending is in the UK.
That is not good news.I wanted my donation to go mainly overseas.

We were discussing such things in the barber's shop yesterday. Like me he said that animals and very young children suffer the most because they can't speak out and tell the authorities what's happening, and in the case of many animals and depending on where they are, animal abuse/cruelty isn't illegal. At least women suffering can get help and put a stop to it. What prompted me to think about donating to the Donkey Sanctuary was the short film i saw on the tv the other day of a donkey with deformed legs carrying a load of bricks on its back. I know they show things like this to pull on the heart strings but it must happen. Who can that donkey turn to? What a miserable life it and others must lead.
I'm glad that loads of money(like the amount you mentioned above)is donated to give animals a better life. It restores my faith in human nature

An owner and his family, utterly dependent on the animal for their income, and (despite the apparent evidence of the photograph) actually prioritising the animal's welfare over that of themselves and their children? Such a photo speaks far more strongly (for me) of the hardships of the family and their poverty.

The film showed a donkey with its harness so tight it'd cut into its flesh. The donkey i mentioned before was so deformed it could hardly walk. The film also mentioned the donkeys being given very little food and water. I don't think whoever owned them put the animal's welfare before that of humans. If they did, they had a funny way of showing it

I'd say the donkey sanctuary raises far more than you would expect, considering the importance of its works.

I might as well volunteer here. rather than going 30 miles to Manchester.
http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/8817444.Oswaldtwistle_animal_sanctuary_in_crisis/ To be honest, i'd rather give money than actually come into contact with the animals. i have depressive thoughts, so i don't think it'd be wise to come into contact with things that would play on my mind.

Maybe that's something you can explore and see whether it's what you expected, how whether giving your time would help or hinder and whether what they actually do is what you expect they do? You may then decide nope my initial feeling was right or maybe you change your mind.

I volunteer for my local branch of Cats Protection - I run the branch website and photograph most of the cats that come in looking for homes. Things I also do are bake cakes and make preserves for our fundraisers, provide raffle prizes and specials for our annual cat show and buy up any cat food I see on yellow sticker for the fosters.

Certainly as far as CP is concerned, if you want to help the cats directly, it is far better to donate money / food / skills to your local branch than through the channels at national level; other than neutering grants and publicity material, each branch is a financially independent entity.

Not so much "Won't somebody please think of the donkeys?" as "Will people please stop thinking of the donkeys for a moment and maybe give some other important matters a bit of thought as well?"

I remember episodes of The Simpsons where they make fun of Donkey Sanctuaries.
