middle of nowhere in France
Taking advantage of the lovely weather today and slight breeze, I was very happy with myself, cruising at 20mph. Suddenly, with no warning, another cyclist just flew past me as if I was standing still and disappeared in the distance. I was stunned and felt deflated, so much so that my speed dropped right down. It is not often that I can ride , what I consider fast for my age, at 20 mph! Oh to be young again, wishful thinking.
happens to me all the time, mind you the only time i get to 20mph is downhill !

I had to smile at this.
I'm always comparing myself to others, but ultimately I am out there, at 50, with all my medical problems, and the best bit?
I am enjoying myself! So what if a 4 yr old on a Batman bike can pass me in the park? (yes, it happened!).
I do what I can within my limits because I know I'll suffer otherwise.

You can cruise at 20mph. I can cruise at 15mph on the flat and for about ½ a mile.
My average is 9-11mph and that's on the flat. Show me an incline and it's walking pace.
Don't worry, be happy!

Great points very well put

It wasn't just one cyclist that flew past me yesterday but a whole club ride, several groups, including the group that used to be my regular ride until a few years ago.

Happens to me too.
I class myself as slow but persistent.
Boris clocked a faster time than me on last year's surrey ride 100!!!
That WAS annoying.
But I still did the 100 miles and I'm v proud of that.

I chose to compare myself with those who never got off their butt, rather than the natural athlete with cut calves and plenty of time to train. Just getting out is an achievement that makes areal difference to my health.

On behalf of all fast cyclists we don't do it on purpose... honest  :giggle:
Seriously if you're not a competitive cyclist then the only thing that matters is you :bicycle:. What others do is neither here nor there.

I know, but it's annoying, especially when its people you'd have kept up with a few years ago.

He didn't disappear in to the distance he took the next left turn after the bend and spent the next ten minutes hiding behind a parked van trying to recover, at least that's what anyone who overtakes me does.....

I am a unbelievably fit and always travel at high speed when cycling. Quite frankly no one could ever overtake me if I didn't let them. I am however a decent sort and hate to belittle the achievements of my inferiors so, if I detect a cyclist anywhere near me, especially behind, i low right downso they can overtake me.
I see it as a public service type thing, I make people happy whilst looking (cunning disguise) like an over weight, middle aged, lolloping idiot. If only they knew the truth..............
