Glad you are all OK! We had are dishwasher catch fire Two years ago this month. It set fire to the kitchen top, fridge and cabinets. It was a mess and the whole house had to be cleaned due to the smoke damage. A forensic industrial expert was bought in a he said never trust your white goods. Turn the washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher off at the wall every night and he gets rid of them after four years!!

It was blimen scary because it happened like yours late at night.

It was doing a cycle... the day/evening's dishes etc... I've read up a bit about that this morning...shan't be leaving such things on again if unattended (but I guess for a lot of people that is kind of the point...)
Goes to show that a lot of devices aren't fit for purpose. If it can't safely be left on occasion with just a few blinkenlights showing, it's a bit pants, really.

Our washing machine and dishwasher are only ever run at night.
Can you imagine the fuss our downstairs neighbour would make if we ran our washer at night when she was sleeping. She just complained 10 minutes ago that my washing machine was disturbing her. She got told to do one! Half past one in the afternoon is a perfectly reasonable time to do my washing. Silly mare that she is.

Lick of gloss paint and that'll be reet.

The point that the smoke alarm was in the wrong room seems to have been missed here!

I go with three smoke alarms in the house and never any shut away from a cause of a fire. Also I would not trust a smoke alarm that is old so replace them quite regularly. 5 years max.

I also put three in each of my rental houses but the tenants kept taking the batteries out!

My microwave was plugged in in 1998 and has never been unplugged since.
