I was well aware of the risk from the TV and switch it of at the mains at night, the cooker, electric, and the washing machine tend to be left on, that dispite having had a washing machine fire many years ago, at the time I put the cause down to the machines age, the programmer failed and it tried to heat before it filled and set a shirt alight, I was working on my bike in the back room and one of my lads came down to use the toilet, he opened the kitchen door and said "Dad the kitchens full of smoke", cue me running around switching it off and pouring water in through the soap dispenser to put it out. Fnaar has had a lucky escape.

Aye, to be honest, we thought we'd have to buy anew one, and it never rose to the top of the priorities list. I am a demon washer-up (I'm really really good at it :-) ) and kitchen tidier, so that wasn't an issue. Hopefully get new one on the insurance

It was when it went up in flames.

Scary stuff.

I was married to a fireman. He was obsessive about turning all the electric off when we were in bed, to the extent that I got a stern telling off if I left something plugged in.

After I divorced him I rebelled by leaving stuff plugged in. Then a couple of years ago my ex sister in law had a nasty house fire caused by a phone charger in her sons bedroom. It was the middle of the night and nephews room was well ablaze by the time he woke up (woken by the smoke alarm), he managed to get out of his room and wake the family who all escaped. Lots of damage to the house.

I then had to admit that my ex husband may have had a good point and now unplug most stuff. Never thought to unplug the dishwasher though.

Some interesting points raised by the fire service with regard to my sister in laws fire. My nephew was in the attic room, the smoke alarm was on the landing outside the bedroom door. His bedroom door was ajar, allowing smoke out to activate alarm. Fire investigator said it's likely it would have taken several more minutes for the alarm to activate had the door been closed.
The fire service advised that all bedrooms have a smoke alarm inside the room. They now have a blue tooth smoke alarm system. If the smoke alarm goes off in the kitchen, all the smoke alarms in every room sound. Expensive, but without it I don't think my SIL would ever sleep again.

Not sure... I presume some electrical component... the 'unit' (as dishwasher-repair-man called it) was recently replaced...had been working fine. When opened up, the inside of the door was very hot (not just from the hot water in the cycle it was doing)
