Disposing of bikes and equipment of someone who has died.

Does anyone have personal experience of disposing of bikes and equipment of a cycling friend/family member who has died. I have been asked to do this on behalf of the family of a former cycling friend.
What worked best and are there any pitfalls?

Same as anything really. Treat it with the respect it deserves and find someone who can enjoy it. Once it's gone, it's theirs to do with what they like.

Contact a local cycle club. Ready supply of appreciative buyers looking for a bargain.

There are Facebook groups you can advertise on. " Yorkshire Cycling Sales" being one that I use- other parts of the country will have their own version. I find it easier than e-bay.

@ASTA that is very sad to read , are there not any family members who might enjoy using them ?

there are enough people on here that enjoy vintage or just plain older style bikes so why not post some pictures and detail on cycle chat or shout if you need any help

Unless there are any cycling enthusiasts in the family or they want to hang on to any of the bikes for sentimental reasons, which doesn't sound the case, just go on eBay. They have a tool which searches for similar previously sold items to give you an idea of price. They will want to know you got the best possible price so you need to show transparency in your disposal. You could sell them on here but you won't be reaching a very wide market.

Are you being asked to sell the stuff and give the proceeds to the estate?

If so, keep accurate records.

It doesn't take long for grief to be replaced by greed in the hearts of some bereaved relatives.

Be particularly careful with any items of high value, and be sure to advise the family what those items could sell for, even if they are only asking you to find a suitable home for them.
