Disproving a myth that cycling in London is dangerous

Hi everyone
I started a new job this month which means I'm commuting from Putney into Marylebone and absolutely love it. My colleagues seem to be very surprised and I have to admit, quite impressed , however I'm getting sick to death with everyone saying - "I wouldn't do it, cycling in London is dangerous!" On the other hand, lots of them would like to cycle to work, but because they see it as scary they wouldn't even try. I wonder if anyone here would help me out with statistics (or publications on cycle safety) , so I could back my claim that it's absolutely fine with some numbers.
I keep telling them that the percentage of cyclists being killed or injured is low in relation to how many people commute, also that in about 3 years of cycling in London I never had any incident. It's not helping that some cyclists themselves perpetuate the myth - I had a discussion with another colleague (what an ignorant, patronising p****) going on how dangerous it is and that you need your head examined to ride in London. Then he let it slip that he jumps red lights or rides on pavements if there is a traffic jam and seemed to find cyclists using hand signals amusing - how can you take someone like that seriously?! I also think that people focus on the moronic cyclists (and there far too many of them) and completely miss the ones that ride responsibly and abide by the highway code.
Anyway I thought that leading by example is the best way, so suggested to two of my colleagues that should they get a bike and wanted to ride to work, I'll go riding with them to show them the ropes.

Traffic speed is probably lower than anywhere else, and there are many more cyclists in London.

Far more dangerous for us in big cities outside London. Faster traffic, less cyclists by far, less awareness.

London does seem to gel better than up here for transport. Cycling is better accepted in London.

Went down to London today for a 25 mile pootle around on towpaths from Marylebone to Limehouse, then back through the city. Really good fun
I love cycling in London.

Stuff the countryside and it's safe as houses.

ahem...there's nothing much wrong with the countryside, i'll have you know. granted, it's a bit dicey on some of the smaller lanes and the cross winds can catch you out. as can some rather alarming farm machinery as it swings in close by your head after the tractor that's been stalking you for 5 miles gets up enough speed to pass you...also, there are the slightly more local locals who aren't all that well adjusted to seeing pretty bikes on roads, especially being ridden by brightly clothed men and women and their panic at the sight of such seemingly strange creatures, often causes them to drive rather erratically and shout random words from the safety of their vehicles...other than that, it's great fun.

I ride regularly in London and the Sticks.

I love London for the slow traffic speed and the amusing cut-and-thrust at junctions like HPC.

It can get a little Harum-Scarum, but always significantly more mellow than a rural NSL A-Road.

Your commute sounds fun! Your colleagues are right to be impressed. It is quite a cool thing to do and you will love it more and more.

I think this is spot on.

I have cycled in London as a child and now more recently as an adult after a long hiatus and it is pretty safe if you follow some basic traffic rules.

Unlike the country where I almost got taken out by an errant tractor.

And renegade sheep.

My impression is that London was the first to be worst and then the first to improve. Though I haven't cycled in Manchester, Fossyant's post gives me the impression that Manchester is still at the worst stage.

Not disagreeing with the above, but what are the facts/stats to back this up?

How would you persuade someone that it isn't dangerous?

Ironically, I was just having a chat with our CEO at work who was telling me about a motorcyclist having got knocked off near Kings Cross this morning, couldn't see if he was alive or not. And then a bit further along he saw that a cyclist had got knocked off at Cambridge Circus and was being attended to kerb-side by a medic...

How many passengers were taken ill on trains, fell down on braking buses and jumped under tube trains ...

Sorry Stuart, I thought this was a forum to chat about cycling...

Unfortunately, I can't answer your questions, or were they just rhetorical? I'm unsure of your point.
