Before lunch today, I went for my first hill ride on the fixed in ages. Just to the top of the local bit of the Malverns and back. Cotton cap, sunglasses and a small bottle of cool water.

The weather was gorgeous. The climb was hard but good and I had a nice chat at the top with a couple of walkers who were doing the length of the Malverns.

We swapped walking and cycling stories and one of them said he had bikes he hadn't ridden for years and that it was time he did so again. It sounded like he meant it.

On the way down, I tried to go flat out and found that too little fixed riding has robbed me of leg speed, but not disastrously. I got to 32mph and 165 rpm, which is OK but not fabulous. Nonetheless, the bike was silent and smooth, the tarmac was lovely, the chat at the top was welcome.

Got home and made soup for lunch. I'm still grinning. I must start taking that bike up hills more often.
