Talk about bad luck RIP

55 yr old cyclist was in an incident with a car in Sunderland yesterday and was swapping details when he was hit by another car. He died on the way to the hospital.
Two guys in a van who purportedly knew him took his bike home for him after the first incident... The bike has not turned up.
The road he was on is notorious for idiot drivers unfortunately

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

A road I know well, narrow in places with blind bends but it doesn't stop some idiots travelling far too fast.

Interesting that there are no arrests or charges at the moment.

"Northumbria Police said two men in a Transit van claiming to know and live near Mr Coates had pulled up and taken the bicycle after the first collision.
But the bike is now missing and police are appealing for witnesses.
The police force said the men, in a grey van, "looked as if they had just finished work".

If there's anybody up there please let these despicable creatures have some serious bad luck!!

Terrible shame for the cyclist but the thieving gits should rot in hell.

Sad.

There are some real dregs, nicking a bike from a downed cyclist. What were the Police thinking? After my collision a guy was kind enough to look after my bike and return it when I got out of hospital, but the coppers only let him have it after recording his name, address and reg details.

Presumably Mr Coates must have allowed the Transit men to take the bike.
If they had taken it after he was fatally injured there wouldn't be any witnesses so we wouldn't know about it.
Perhaps they tried to deliver it to his house and went away after finding him out.

I've worked with Stan for 17 years and it appears that the press stories are inaccurate. Stan's son rang work and explained what happened and his account makes much more sense than the press stories. Understandably, I don't feel comfortable going into details until the police have finished their investigation.

This tragic accident has hit everyone very hard at work as Stan was a great character and a lovely man.

The notion of the Transit men nicking the bike was put out by Northumbria Police as part of an appeal for information.

As for Stan's son 'explaining what happened', unless he was there, his source of information will be the same police force.

Seems to me the sequence of events - particularly how Stan came by his fatal injuries - is still far from clear.
